Squash Plantin' Day

Submitted by Lynn on Fri, 05/18/2007 - 2:22pm.

I'm trying to do 20 minutes in the garden a day. I've always believed that if you can throw 20 minutes at something, if you do it every day, you can accomplish a great deal. I used to do piles of sewing that way, virtually everything I wore.

So I did some weeding in the still-horrid raspberry/fig bed and planted old-fashioned yellow crookneck squash in an empty spot in that bed. It's the old warty variety that I really love.

In a big heap of dirt that looked promising I put Futsu Japanese winter squash. John never liked winter squash until we went out to dinner once for our anniversary at a really expensive restaurant here in town (it was an anniversary gift).

It was a "prix fixe" dinner, where you sit down and food just arrives. Among the dishes was a winter squash puree. I think because the place was so expensive, he tried it. Next thing I knew he'd practically licked the plate! It turns out that he'll eat winter squash served savory but not sweet, and his favorite is Japanese squashes like the one we had that night. I always fix it for him roasted along with garlic then pureed with butter and cream. What's not to love?

We'll see if any of it comes up; the seed is from 2005! So I planted about 3 times the seed I normally would. If I get lucky, I'll move the extra seedlings to other locations or give some away.

It took closer to 45 minutes than 20 to do what I wanted to do. Now I'm pooped.

I always say I'm not going

I always say I'm not going to plant much squash, but then I always do. LOL! DH will only eat it fried. And since he is on Weight Watchers, that's a nono. Well, I'm sure I'll fry it once or twice (because it is WONDERFUL!!). But I'm really into Paula Deen lately. I have just bought every one of her books and they have some yummy sounding summer squash recipies in them. I'm sure he won't even try them, but it's mainly for me and the kids. LOL!

I planted a row of yellow straightneck squash, but that's all. They are all up now, I'll probably have fruit on them in 3-4 weeks or less maybe.

squash fairy

My eldest sister has this way with squash. She always thinks she hasn't planted enough and then has more squash than she knows what to do with. She cooks it in every possible way, freezes it, and by the end of the summer is giving it away to random passersby. One evening my other sister left her car unlocked. When she returned to it in the morning, there on the front seat was a big pile of squash and a note - "Enjoy, love the Squash Fairy." Guess who it was really from!

Yeah, it's always comin' out of our ears! LOL! A couple of years ago, my FIL was just taking bagfuls up to the bank whenever he was in town. One day the gal up in the drivethru some him coming and headed him off before he got to the counters. Told him to swing by the drivethru first sometimes so she can have a fair share of getting some. LOL!
