    <directions>Preheat your oven to 160 degrees Celcius. Mix the first four ingredients in a bowl. Put the syrup and butter in a pan over low heat and melt completely. Mix the hot water with the bicarbonate of soda, add to the sugar/fat mixture and stand back.

Now pour this into the dry ingredients and mix well. Place tablespoons of the mixture onto baking trays, and flatten each biscuit to about 2.5 - 3 inches in diameter. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until a deep brown. Take them out while they're still doughy, or by the time they crisp up they'll be charred discs. Cool on the baking trays for 5 minutes, and then cool completely on a wire rack.</directions>
