A Specific Call for Help for South Asia

Dear Friends,
About a year ago, I helped set up a website called Social Action Community for a group of activists who've been working with Northwest Medical Teams. NW Medical Teams is a local (to me--Portland, Oregon) nonprofit that sends medical supplies and volunteer personnel to disaster areas all over the world. They're a Christian group, and this Pagan gives them aid. I believe in them that much. They're there to help, not proselytize.
In working on the website project, I met a guy named Ron. He's a paramedic who's been all over the world helping in disasters, and he's actively working to train paramedics in third world countries where such services don't exist yet. And we're pretty sure that one time he carted my sorry self off to the hospital in his ambulance during the year I was so sick after my heart attack. Ron is a good egg.
Ron is going to the disaster area. He's leaving tomorrow. I promised my friends at NW Medical Teams that I'd do what I could to get word out that they need contributions. If you don't like giving over the web, call 800-959-HEAL (4325). I know you're getting asked a lot of different ways in a lot of different places to send money. If you haven't donated yet, as Ron's friend I ask you now as a member of TNH to give to NW Medical Teams. Your money will SO not be wasted.
This is shaping up to be the worst natural disaster in our time. There's so much to do. If you can't go, like Ron, then help the folks who can go.
Here's a hope and a prayer for a better 2005 for everyone, all over the world.
Love,
Lynn

I just donated.
What else can you do?
In addition to a one-time donation or an automatic monthly or quarterly payment donation to NW Medical Teams, who just sent over 20 medics and doctors this week, each with about $10,000 worth of aid apiece, you can also make a difference by finding out which businesses in your community are supporting the relief efforts and patronize those establishments.
NW Medical Teams has a page on their website that lists all the Portland area businesses that are donating proceeds towards disaster relief. There are several restaurants that are donating all the proceeds from a lunch or a dinner this month, there are benefit concerts, there are sports stores and jewelry stores donating proceeds, etc. See if you can find out from the local charities in your area who's doing these kinds of charitable programs in your area and support them.
