Scary necessary book!

This is not a book by a vegetarian! This man eats meat and even eats fast food at some select places. But if you think fast food culture is great, you gotta read this. Sure you gotta die of something, but does that mean you walk on freeways? Have unsafe sex? Play Russian roulette? I doubt it. Even if you intend to keep eating this way, read this book so you at least know what you're choosing to do. It can even help you choose "fast food" restaurants with better food safety practices (interestingly, Jack in the Box is now one of the safest if not the safest places in the country).

I just finished it, and I am truly horrified. There is so much I didn't know or understand about our meat industry or their relationships with American fast food restaurants. Jawdropping! I told my husband I seriously never want to buy McDonald's food unless things change dramatically. Jack-in-the-Box and In & Out Burger are now two of the only burger places we are planning to frequent. It takes a LOT to make me want to boycott anything, but if you read this book, you will understand our decision!

Being new to the site, this is my first comment. :>) I began on the road to veganism by reading this book. It impacted me THAT much! I made my dh read parts of it (which he did kicking and screaming basically) and then he too was influenced mightily to "never eat at MickeyD's AGAIN!" We progressed to being vegetarians about six months after reading "Fast Food Nation" and then about a month ago, became vegans. Vegans do not eat any animal products whatsoever, including dairy. And yes, it can be done and yes, we get our protein just fine, thanks , and our health is so much better as a result. And it's even really, we find, FUN! Also, I'm a diabetic (Type II) and my blood sugars are quickly approaching a normal level, plus I am losing weight without even trying, as a vegan.

But anyway, I slightly digress...:>)

Fast Food Nation is truly a catalyst for change in this country. It gave notice bigtime to the meat industry that their cover has been blown, and not a moment too soon! I applaud Mr. Schlossler's huge efforts to expose what's REALLY going on in fast food, and why we have so many health problems in this country. A real wakeup call to everybody who cares!

Welcome

We got our kids to stop pestering us about fast food by watching Super Size Me. Smiling All Josie had to see was the scene where Morgan Spurlock vomits about five minutes after finishing a meal. That was that. "Fast Food Nation" is a great book. I recommend it highly.

I don't think it's necessary to go all the way to being vegan, though if that's what works for you go for it. For my family it doesn't work. What DOES work is this: Know Your Producer. Buy food products from people you know, or at least know about. I know my dairyman personally. He comes to my house once a week; I'm even his webmaster. I get my eggs from my own chickens, I definitely know those particular producers. Smiling I don't personally know the people from whom I buy my meat, but I know their reputations and practices, and when I can afford to buy a hog I do personally know that grower. That, more than anything, is the key.
