A community coming together

Submitted by jennye on Wed, 02/18/2004 - 1:27pm.

A boy at a local school was killed in a car accident over the weekend. It's a tiny school in a tiny community, Dora. 7th grade-12 is about 90 kids, so this really made an impact. We were supposed to play them in basketball last night, but the game has been postponed til Saturday. It affected all our tiny schools in the county.

Each of the classes at Dora selflessly gave their class money to the family to help pay for expenses. This is money raised by car washes, bake sales, etc. that the classes have been raising since Kindergarten. Class sizes in our schools are so small, it's one teacher per grade, and the money goes with the class on thru to graduation. So these classes have given up senior trips, proms, etc. that they have been raising for years!

Anyway, for more of the story, go here:

The community of Dora is one of the 4 in our county. Three of these are so small, there isn't even a convience store or gas station, it's pretty much just a school, post office, and volunteer fire dept. Dora, like Floyd where I live, and Elida, the other one, all have to go to Portales, at least 20 miles away, or Clovis, 40-60 miles for even simple things like milk and bread. All the surrounding communities, including Portales (pop, 12,000) and Clovis (pop about 20,000 or so) pulled together and raised over $16,000 in both cash and goods for these kids to have a prom and for a scholarship fund.

The radio station didn't play songs or commercials this morning, they answered phones on the air. I had to go to town for gas and groceries and I cried almost the whole time in the truck. It's a very sad thing that happened, but for our community to pull together in this way, as one, it makes you feel good inside.

Just wanted to share.
Smiling Have a great day!

whoops, more to say

if you go to one of the sites I mentioned, look at where the donations came from. Besides many individuals, the junior class at my school has donated money, Walmart has donated candy and decorations, McDonalds, florists, hair salons, photography, dresses and tuxes! A resturant has donated catering services (since our schools are so far away from anything, dinner is included for the proms here). the coke plant has donated drinks. THIS is a small community pulling together!

I may come back and brag some more! LOL!

small town

It sounds to me like this is a very good side of a small town. People caring for their neighbors. Wouldn't it be nice if some billionaire saw the story and gave the kids their trip after all.

Our Sophmores are having a cake auction during halftime, the donations will go to Dora's Sophmore class.

And I think the total contributions so far are up to $18,000.

Interesting Jenny, though I haven't read the link yet. That is exactly why I love small town life - there is nothing like it. I think your situation is a little different from mine - being so isolated, but similar in many ways. Our town is 7000 people and has a real cozy, small town feel to it.

If the small towns I've lived in were more like that, I would have liked them better.
