Housework with pain
Submitted by housewife07 on Tue, 11/24/2009 - 7:46pm
Hi everyone! I'm new to this site! I've been struggling with chronic pain in the knees and hip for the past 5 years, and have been a SAHW ever since we got married due to my health issues. I've been reading so much about homemaking now that I really would love to be able to do it full time, but I am so in pain that it makes it hard.
Is anyone else having the same issues? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello good to meet you. I
Hello
good to meet you. I have a couple of pain issues which come and go, so maybe not as bad as you, I get pain in the front of my pelvis, and have a 'loose' shoulder which comes and goes, depending on how gentle I am with myself. I also have recently developed coccyx pain, but that only means i can't sit for long periods, which makes me get on with stuff a bit more!! It's the shoulder that impacts most on my homemaking, as it makes that scrubbing/polishing/wiping action difficult and also lifting things can be awkward.
I think you have to listen to your body and realise your limits, sometimes I just have to focus on what I can do and delegate those things I really can't.
Think creatively - there are lots of gadgets and gizmos out there that might help, long handled brooms etc so you don't have to kneel down on the floor, etc. Also I guess when you are in bad pain some of my favourite parts of home making - getting crafty could be therapeutic as well as useful?!
Sorry can't be much more help than that - hope you manage to work out what suits you

Thank you, Nelly! Sorry to hear you're in pain! I do have a gadget, a long stick with handles to pick things up from the floor, but I can't stand up or walk for more than a few minutes, even with my cane...I haven't done any craft work but it's an idea, thanks!
Me
I have fibromyalgia, and quite frankly, it's been worth it to me to invest in housekeeping help. Even once a month, or even quarterly, for the big jobs, it's worth it.
Thank you, Lynn! I love your
Thank you, Lynn! I love your web site!
I would love to hire help, but hubby doesn't want to...He works long physical hours and doesn't like to do it, plus he doesn't do it much and rather fast, as he said himself, he's not very skilled in this area! I asked at physio today what should I do, and my PT told me to do just a little, but wait until I gain more strength. I never feel like I know how much or how little to do, I don't want to have a setback either!
Right now I have a very swollen left knee and a chronic right hip bursitis with labral tear and cyst...I've had injuries for years due to knock-knees, and I'm only 28...I hope to have children one day! Thanks for taking the time to write. Sorry to hear you are in pain as well.
