can anyone help me out please?

It varies by state. In New Mexico "a child must be at least five years of age prior to 12:01 a.m., on September 1, of the school year" (according to Albuquerque Public School website).
It generally breaks down like this:
Kinder--5,6
1st--6,7
2nd--7,8
3rd--8,9
4th--9,10
5th--10,11
6th--11,12
7th--12,13
8th--13,14
9th (Freshman)--14,15
10th (Sophmore)--15,16 (16 is driving age here)
11th (Junior)--16,17
12th (Senior)--17,18
I think California's cut off date is different. Had a family at our school that moved here from CA and they were a grade ahead of the norm here. However, they were also behind when they moved here and ended up getting held back, so they all ended up with their normal classes anyway.
