I'm not sure if this is in the right place?!

I've had a painful coccyx (tailbone) since the spring, alhough I have no recollection of injuring it. I have mentioned it to my doctor, who has said that there is no a lot I can do about it and that it will get better in time. It can be incredibly painful if I sit for a long time or in a slumped position, so it is not generally a problem as such (and is probably doing wonders for my posture!!) but if I have a long journey, or even just sitting on the hard bench at church it can be really uncomfortable. Often it is not the sitting, but when I get up it is really sore.

Has anyone had a similar problem - if so how long did it take for things to get better and did you find there was anything you could do to help yourself? I'm thinking probably if I lost a bit of weight that might help (and again would probably do me the world of good Eye-wink)

Thanks, Nelly x

I have had this for

I have had this for ages.

It's possible to acquire it by the fact of sitting on hard benches. Or you may have fallen on your butt once without thinking about it. Voila.. bruised coccyx! There is supposed to be surgery for it, BUT it has a low success rate and a high "makes it worse" rate.

So.... carry a cushion everywhere and don't be shy about using it.
figure out a way to work standing up. I did this for years. Takes a special kind of work place & I lucked out (now retired, but I am standing as I type this).

There are also industrial rated chairs that help. I got one by accident at work (some big hot shot got it through a grant and couldn't use it because it was too high (he was very short))... when I decided to buy one for home I found out they generally list for about $2800 (I kid you not). So standing up is the key.

I also try to read and walk on the tread mill. Exercise helps. Not-sitting helps.

Be tough, carry your cushion and use it.

That's my recomendation...

Jeff

See a chiropractor?

I fell several years ago and heard my tailbone snap. I thought I'd broken it, but several weeks later, when waking up in bed I moved my leg just so and it snapped back. It was out of alignment, not broken. But for those weeks, I was MISERABLE.

A couple ladies I know who's tailbones got knocked out of alignment in childbirth got chiropractic treatment and swore by it.

Doesn't necessarily take a trauma like a fall or childbirth to mess up your tailbone, though.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

I feel your pain!

I broke my tailbone 2 1/2 years ago, so I know exactly what you are talking about. That severe pain that you feel when you go from sitting to standing is a huge red flag. Find a doctor with experience in coccyx pain. I think I saw 5 before I found mine. Some even laughed at me & made jokes about it. The website www.coccyx.org is very helpful. You should also get an x-ray while in the painful sitting position so the doctor can see if your coccyx is moving. I am scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks & have heard that it is 80%-90% effective. For me, its my last resort after chiropractors, physical therapy, acupuncture, cortisone shots & thousands of dollars.

Good luck & feel better soon!
