Call out to knitters!

Anhata's picture

OK, Knit Picks is having a 40% off sale on all their books and I need to get my essential-these-are-the-only-books-you'll-ever-need knitting library stocked. So far Lynn, Queen of Everything has recommended:

--The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns
--The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns
--Big Girl Knits (if you're a size 14 or above)
--Socks from the Toe Up
--Folk Socks (which I do have)
--The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook
--The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques

Though it seems almost unnecessary, if not insulting, to consult opinions besides the offical Knitting 9-1-1 Maven, are there any others that you Gentle Readers would consider the BARE ESSENTIAL books in a knitter's library?

Ooo, sale! Sounds like a good one! I'm not well-stocked on knitting books, myself, so I don't have any to add. Maybe something fun by the Yarn Harlot to make you laugh? Smiling

Love her!

Which reminds me, I haven't looked at her blog in ages.

This is kind of off topic,

This is kind of off topic, but I have tried to start knitting twice and failed. Any tricks for newbies?

A few ideas

First!

Start with a super simple project, like a washcloth---all you have to do is one kind of knit stitch over and over. You'll master the knit stitch and have something really useful when you're done. It's much shorter than a scarf! You'll need size eight knitting needles (not double-pointed) and a skein of 100% cotton yarn. Cast on 30 stitches. Knit back and forth with the knit stitch until washcloth is square. Bind off. Voila! Knitted washcloths really are awesome and people love them, they make great gifts.

Online knitting tutorials. They helped me alot when I got confused. You'll find the cast on, knit, and bind off stitches there.

Knitting Circles. I wouldn't still be knitting if I hadn't had a weekly session with the Stitchin' Sedition girls where I could cry, "Help!".

Knitting Classes. I've taken one or two of these at a yarn store. You sign up for a class on how to make a project...it's like a short-term knitting circle (except it's not free). They're fun, IMO. Check out your local yarn stores, they may offer some.

Good luck!

The ONLY books you need?

The two Knitter's Handy books, and the entire set of Barbara Walker stitch treasuries. Maybe also her Knitting from the Top Down and Priscilla Gibson-Roberts's Knitting in the Old Way. With those books, you can knit forever and never repeat a sweater, all your own designs, essentially.
