Frequent colds

DS12 has been getting one cold after another lately - he must have had four or five in the last three months or so. Strangely enough, I haven't caught even one of the colds from him.

Is there a cause of repeated cold infections? Is there anything I can feed him/give him to avoid him getting any more this winter? I know vitamin C is good and he drinks at least one glass of orange juice daily, sometimes more. Anything else I can do?

Sinus infection?

Submitted by Hope on Wed, 02/11/2004 - 12:36pm.

Does he by any chance have infected sinus that are never quite clearing up? I got a sinus infection a few winters ago that kept coming back for about six months. It would get better then get worse again. I developed chest infection, as a result, as the sinus would drain down spreading the infection.

It took treating the sinus to make it all better.

How would we know?

How do you tell if it is a sinus problem, Hope? He doesn't have pain in his sinuses, and the colds themselves have not been very severe or prolonged. He's not having any problems with his chest either, not even a cough.

Ask a doctor

Submitted by Hope on Wed, 02/11/2004 - 2:41pm.

Does he have allergies perhaps?

I don't know....just throwing out ideas. What kind of symptoms does he get? Infected mucas is usually greenish or whitish, which indicates infection. Allergies tend to run more clear.

But I'll get into trouble with the queen if I say more and don't say ask a *real* doc. Big grin

Honey, have you changed his toothbrush? This can be a source of re-infection.

maybe not a cold

Honey,,I tend to agree with Hope on the sinus infection. [[just because it does not hurt is not always an indication...my DD had Pneumonia and did not cough once untill she got treatment and it lossened up the mucus]][not saying HE has pn ,,just symtoms can be off]

reasons why...you did not get it
it keeps coming back

I know it is a pain to go to the Dr. but it sounds like he needs to get looked at....better now than later as it is easier to clear up now

I have had years of sinus problems and like Hope said you can keep getting the same infection as it never TOTALLY went away.

I believe this can happen with little ones and ear infections,,,,just keep having the same one that is only subdued with treatment

keep us posted

I've changed his toothbrush this morning, and am just about to spray all the doorknobs Smiling I don't think he has weird coloured mucus, I will ask him! No allergies as far as I know. He had asthma when he was younger, but has grown out of it. I guess I'll have to book an appoinment with the doctor, whom I expect will tell me 'children get a lot of colds'. Bye' Can you tell I don't have a lot of faith in doctors?!

Thanks for all your help Smiling

Multivitamins

Submitted by Kerri on Thu, 02/12/2004 - 6:17am.

I'm sure I've said it before, but my kids have been almost completely bug free for well over a year since I started them on multivitamins. It isn't just about getting vitamin C - zinc is another component that makes a big difference to the immune system. There are plenty of generic types in different chemists, so just look for something that's cheap, but with the right quantities of the things you need most.

I just bought my two a cheap multivitamin and a semi-herbal thing which contains zinc, echinacea and slippery elm almongst other things. My GI specialist was threatening the possibility of a big-time immunosuppressant drug so I'm planning ahead, just in case I can't argue my way out of it! Eye-wink

Normally we spend almost every week of the first 4mths of the school year at the doctor (no appointment required of course or I'd probably go every other week!). The last two school years have been almost entirely bug-free, other than the cld they picked up from being in close contact with their snotty, hygiene-free cousin for a week. EVERYONE picked that bug up!

My kids usually have yellow mucus when they have a cold - doesn't everyone?? I agree with clear for allergies though. It's an indicator only though, not written in stone.

Kerri.

Colored mucas

Submitted by Hope on Thu, 02/12/2004 - 6:30am.

I'm not sure where I heard it, whether it was fron a doc, something I read, or a friend. I think it must have been my son's allergy specialist many years ago.
I've watched numerous sufferers over the years and it's proven true every time. Green, yellow or white (early or mild infection) mucus was always an infection(bug of some sort) and clear mucus proved to be allergy/hayfever related.

vit C

Submitted by kittycat45 on Thu, 02/12/2004 - 10:18am.

I too give my DDs vit C every morning. One thing I like is if you get too much it just flushes out of their system.

my DDs have had only two or three colds EVER...been on C all along

my ENT also suggested the vit C ...if I feel a tickle come on I load up and knock it out!!

I also give DD16 [just had BD] vit E and an A&D every morning for her skin
