Knitting for the winter

Are you knitting items for the winter yet? I'm ready to make some hats, gloves, and scarves for family members.

ripple afghan

Crocheting a ripple afghan out of incredibly huge amounts of Homespun acrylic--this thing is going to be more of a blanket than an afghan, as it's turning out, and very heavy. Apart from that, socks. I have been very unmotivated to knit or spin or anything lately. I'll get back to it; it's a fallow period.

scarves

scarves are all I have the courage to try and knit so far...and hats for newborns (they can't complain about the fit) so I'll be doing a few scarves in the chunkier weight yarns with the big needles for the younger cousins and niece.

I crocheted a lap throw in the Homespun years ago for husband's 85+ grandma and it was so heavy she gave it back. too much for her to lift.

**sigh** I'd love to have the courage to try sweaters.

I don't knit (though someday

I don't knit (though someday I would like to learn some fine crochet). But during cold winter months I like to quilt. I use a hoop rather than a large frame so the rest of the quilt can cover me and keep warm. It's my goal to just make tops in the summer and quilt in the winter (though handquilting does take a LONG time to do. I think it's worth it though). Just don't have enough time to do as much as I would like. After the kids are gone...

Ah, now quilting

would be on my "someday I'd like to learn" list, after I find the courage to start a sweater. My aunt quilts, but she didn't start until the kids left home. I'm sensing a theme here... Smiling

I didn't start quilting, or

I didn't start quilting, or sewing for that matter, til I had two kids on the ground (but before the next two. Those two keep me from doing much of anything anymore. LOL!).

I'm trying to teach the girls (they are 11 and 9) how right now. They are making their American Girl dolls some small quilts. Kirsten (the Pioneer girl) is getting one with John Deere fabric, Felicity (Rev. War girl) is getting princess pinks and purples.

Sweaters

I'm knitting a sweater for DD8, the yoke sweater style. I've got the body and sleeves done, am starting on the fair isle on the yoke now. I plan on making each kid one sweater this year.

A dear friend told me that when her boys were little she always took them to the yarn store in fall and let them pick out yarn for their sweater, they each got a sweater every year, and I loved that idea. I'm going to try it with my three.

DD8 chose for her colors dark blue, hot pink, fuchia, and purple. It's going to look great. DD7 will undoubtedly insist on the same colorway--they call it "sissytwins" when they wear the same clothes, they love it. DS5, I predict, will want bright blue, that seems to be his fave.

I'm also planning on making hats for Christmas for my neice, who will be three in Jan. and my nephew who will be one in March.

That's all I have planned for now.
