"I prefer Appalacian American"

--Bo Duke upon being called a "hillbilly" by a Brother in Atlanta.

ROFLMAO

Plus also, everything out of the mouth of Willie Nelson, who's the bomb.

Appalachian-American

Perfect. As a descendant of many poor Appalachian Americans who's been called a hillbilly, white trash and hick, this is liberating and vindicating. Smiling (Not sure why it's still ok to stereotype this group but it seems to be.) Thanks!

Amen!

Having lived for 25 years in the Ozark Mountains (though moved to the Pacific NW four years ago), I understand what you mean. Those hills and hollers aren't as tall or deep as those in Appalachia, but the term hillbilly and others are still flung around, it's even part of the marketing of the region in the tourist mecca of Branson, MO.

My family was one of those that had to live by the po' folks adage of "make it ourselves, make do, or do without" for many years and there were so many people who were worse off than we were. But the hill folk though poor, are just like people everywhere, good and bad, with the compensation of living in one of the prettiest spots on earth three seasons out of the year.

Glad you loved the quote, too!
