The First Bra

I am so frickin' not ready for this.

Today Josie and I went to Freddies and bought her four little teenie bras. She doesn't really have anything much to hold up yet, but not for long. And she does need that extra layer under her shirts now; she's noticeably, uh, pointy in the chestal area.

oy.

Yeah, we've gotten to the point of wearing them, too. At least, sports bras. DD10 is so tall, her cheer uniform is a large to cover her belly, but it's too big in the armpit area. Same with her basketball uniform. Besides, good to get used to the darn thing anyway, right?

We have the opposite

Submitted by knittingwoman on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 5:52am.

We have the opposite problem. My daughter is 11 and tall and "well developed" in fact I don't think I had breasts that size until after I had my first child. However, she has developmental delays and a lot of issues around how things feel and she refuses to wear a bra. It's winter right now but spring and summer are coming and her breasts just keep getting bigger:( The problem is compounded by the fact that I am a bad role model. I absolutely hate bras and don't even own one. I wear a couple of layers in the summer with sports tops and apart from the gravity years and multiple pregnancies have brought I don't need to wear a bra.
It is so culturally determined. Why should she have to wear a bra? My daughter is comfortable without one and doesn't do any sports where she would uncomfortable without one. She does ballet and even the older girls don't wear bras (or underwear) under their dance clothes. The girls with big breasts just wear several tight layers, works fine.
This is a topic that I struggle with all the time just now. Don't even ask what it is like when a girl with developmental delays starts menstruating right after she turns 11.

I can sympathize

Though my DD does not have developmental delays she does have sensory integration issues and cannot stand seams across the chest, elastic, tags, embroidery, and all sorts of other things in her clothes. I shudder to think how she's going to react to a bra in a few years.

Does your DD tolerate the tank tops with shelf bras inside them? I like to wear those in the summer and I hardly feel the shelf.

Does she not like the sports bras? They never worked for me, but I think they'd not feel much different than a leotard? Some girls I knew in college only wore sports bras because they're so much more comfy.

I've been very large ever since the age of 14 and couldn't go without a bra. I had reduction surgery in '98 and am still a DD cup size. But the clothes with built-in bras work for me and are really very comfy.

Good luck, my dear. I hope you find something that works for her.

My unsolicted advice, Jo-jo: Enjoy this phase and don't wish for your trainer to fill in too quickly!
