"Answering the Call", or, Foster Adopt Update #1

Well, I got the introductory packets of information from the AdoptUSKids organization and from the Boys & Girls Aid and hadn't even cracked them open when I recieved an email from the Foster Family Care Network recruiter that they had two children, a brother age three and a sister age four, who needed theraputic foster care and eventual adoption and were we interested?

In a word, yes.

So I have filled out their foster home application for certification and have an appointment with a foster care caseworker on Tuesday. *Think good thoughts!*

Nothing may come of this, or everything. I'm pretty excited though. So I cracked open the packets of info and there's some GREAT advice in there.

The title of one of the guides is "A Child is Waiting." That just hurts my heart.

In Oregon there are about 300 children available for adoption in foster care at any given time.

Hopefully, in several months, there will be two fewer.

Whatever unfolds, I'm just so profoundly thankful that I have a partner who supports this need of mine and a child who is almost as eager as I am to adopt a foster child.

I checked out a pile of books from the library about foster care and adoption and am nestling in for a research blitz.

We still need to finish shoveling out the front bedroom and organizing the house.

I can't wait for Tuesday.

The recruiter said something about putting us on a certification fast-track for these two children. I don't know exactly what that means or if it can happen, but in the meantime, prayers for these two precious children who have experienced something that no one should ever have happen to them, much less such little ones, and are in need of a stable, loving home.

Good thoughts

This is so exciting! I hope everything works out the way you want it.

Have you done much reading on older child adoption? My (very limited) understandiing is that it can be very challenging especially if there was abuse or parental drug use in the past. I know you're up to the challenge, but I was just curious about what kind of research you might have done. I've been feeling the itch to become a foster parent for some time but my husband has no interest. And when I bring home pamphlets titled "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and You" it makes him even less interested.

I'm in the midst of research right now

I have not done a lot of research previously, just the promotional blurbs on foster adoptin websites.

The benefit of the Foster Family Care Network is the massive amounts of training and support the foster parents recieve. You literally have a whole team at your back with 24 support. This is because a) it's private organizations, not the state, and b) because it's "theraputic" foster care (read: rehabilitative).

And this may not work for us. DH is open to adopting from foster care, but only up to a point. Mild disabilities/challenges he feels he can deal with but when you start talking about blind or deaf children, wheelchairs, and other significant disabilities he's not comfortable with it. Which I feel I must honor. One should know one's limits so as to avoid heartache down the road.

It's all new right now, but I'm trying to educate myself as quick as I can.

I hope that those children will find a safe haven, and I hope that it is in your loving home. Best wishes!

Quick Update

Submitted by Anhata on Tue, 02/12/2008 - 5:03pm.

Met with someone today (foster care recruitment supervisor) about fostering/adopting the two siblings. The upshot is everything is still tentative at this point. They're looking at several different families who've expressed interest in the children--we're one of many. And adoption isn't as firm an option as we were initially told, it's in process but likely that they could be adopted.

The supervisor will keep in touch on that, in the meantime, we'll start taking the training/classes that are necessary and keep getting the house ready for the home visit and continue the work to get approved.

In case you were wondering. TTFN.

Final update on this post:

Submitted by Anhata on Sat, 05/10/2008 - 4:27pm.

those particular children were placed with a different family, which is OK. The organization is very skilled with special needs children, I trust that they found the best family for those children, I wish them all the very best.

We're still preparing to adopt from foster care and are interviewing agencies right now. More to come.
