Back In the Saddle

Submitted by witchiepoo on Wed, 01/02/2008 - 11:59am.

I hurt mt foot the Friday after Thanksgiving, and hadn't been able to walk for exercise or run since then. That combined with the necessary sedentary lifestyle of a student and quite a lot of stress eating has combined to one big feeling of blobby yuck and tight pants.

I need to move.

I need to eat more veggies.

I need to drink more water.

So, New Year's Day I got on the treadmill and walked...slowly and carefully... for 2 miles. Felt good.

This morning I got on the treadmill and walked, a little faster but still carefully for 2 miles. Felt good.

For lunch today I had chunky tomato soup (progresso) and some steamed veggies. Felt good.

Still need to work on the water though.

Peace,
-Jo

and still the same Old Me Smiling

Only this time I am FORTY, as of 1st Jan - I can hardly believe it Jawdropping!

I managed to lose about twenty four pounds last summer, then put quite a lot of it back on again. I'm not even thinking about getting back on the scales yet as I'm still in holiday mode! Next Monday I go back to work though, and in the evening I am going back to Weightwatchers. It's got to be done Sad

Will try to check in here with my progress reports from time to time.

Happy New Year to all!

Blobby-yuck Begone!

Submitted by lgunnoe on Wed, 01/02/2008 - 2:40pm.

I'm with you Jo. I've eaten myself back up almost 10 of the 15 pounds I had lost. Sad

I'm getting back to logging my food, water, and exercise on My Food Diary. I really think it's a great tool.

I did some time on the eliptical machine, ate oatmeal for brunch (I slept in past breakfast! Eye-wink ) and have been drining water and green tea for hydration today.

My other challenge will limiting my diet coke to 12 oz a day (or less.)

I go back to school tomorrow. I've really enjoyed my time off (DH and the DDS have been off too, so it's been really nice) but I'm ready to go back!

I was thinking about reviving the "Taking Charge" thread, too. Hopefully I'll get back to posting regularly.

Anyone else joining us for a "New Year~New You?"

Love to all,
Lenora

My Food Diary

Signed up today! Smiling I love that site. It was a huge help to me a couple of years back.

I also bought a bunch of produce and researched new and exciting ways of preparing it. I really love fruits and veggies, so I figure if I eat at least two servings of them every meal, I should have less interest in the bad stuff, right?
Up tonight: roasted asperagus drizzled with balsamic vinegar.

Did well with water today too, but no treadmill; I didn't sleep well last night and figured the sleep was more valuable at this point.

Ciao!

New baby, new you?

Submitted by Zillah on Wed, 01/09/2008 - 4:38am.

Well, the size of DD1week (I'm not a terribly large person and she was 9lb 10oz) has left me with fairly well split abdominal muscles. I have some yoga exercises you can do very early post-partum and then some physiotherapy ones for a little later. My goal is to spend 10 minutes a day on abdominal and pelvic floor exercises this week.

Shouldn't be too hard, right? . . .

Go easy on yourself Zillah!

Submitted by Kerri on Wed, 01/09/2008 - 1:18pm.

You need to be gentle to your body, and I'm not sure that 10mins every day is gentle enough - I'd be tempted to check that with your doctor. Your body needs a bit of space to heal itself, and getting yourself fit is not the kind of goal you should be trying to set yourself this month I'm sure. If you're dead set on it please just check with a medical professional. Maybe every other day or twice in the week would be gentler.

I set my standards considerably lower - I'm still aiming to want to eat normally and prepare normal meals. DH and I went out for a fish and chip lunch with a load of foreign engineers we have visiting, so I finally gave up on all possibility of figuring out what to cook for dinner and let DD11 cook herself and DS9 a plate of noodles. I've got my usual post-Christmas blues and apathy so inevitably I just can't get enthusiastic about any cooking or eating. I'm fortunate in that weight has never been a major issue for me (don't smoke either, or drink much thank goodness!) but I can see the effects of several weeks of dodgy eating. Not even excessive eating but just unbalanced, unhealthy, unenthusiastic eating, and I'm sure that turns back to affect my mood because my body's not really getting the nutrients it needs.

other than that my self-care is currently consisting of remembering to moisturise the worst affected patches of skin so that they don't drop off. I'm clearly not doing a great job with that though because the eczema on my hands and forearms is pretty yucky and I have dry patches all over.

Honey, you should be very proud of yourself for getting back to WW, and I think the fact that you really *want* to go is probably testament to it having made a positive impact on you. When you accidentally get away from healthier habits and you notice the difference in a negative way that has to be a good thing, because it gives you the impetus you need to push back towards the healthier habits again.

gentleness

Couldn't get much gentler, Kerri, so don't worry! The exercises consist of lying on my front and holding my tummy muscles in, doing some pelvic floor stuff and lying on my back relaxing muscle groups in turn. And my midwife is happy, so I'm happy Smiling

Feeling positive

Submitted by Honey on Sat, 01/12/2008 - 8:32am.

Hi!

Didn't go to Weightwatchers Monday after all, as friend couldn't make it and I had a date, and there wasn't time..excuses excuses. But started dieting anyhow, and drinking loads of water and am feeling good. Weightwatchers rescheduled for next Monday evening and I have actually paid online so they are taking the money out of my card on a monthly basis, makes it more likely I will go every week Smiling Also is a bit cheaper.

Also today I made a decision not to see Nice New Man anymore and told him so. He was beginning to look like Not So Nice New Man and I feel empowered by the decision.

This afternoon had my hair streaked and cut in a funky new style, out on the razz tonight with my girlfriends.

Go me! Big grin

You are definitely sounding stronger and empowered Honey!!! - I like it!! Smiling Good for you. I think it would be very hard to find a perfect someone after so many years of just having yourself to answer to. DS after all is very good natured, has been brought up by you, and is still your son so he has to do what he's told when it matters to you. Getting really close to a completely new human being after years of self-sufficiency can't be easy, but I love the fact that you're now confident enough to get there and have a go, have some fun with it, and being daring enough to be the one turning them down. You've really blossomed in the last year or two, and I'm sure everyone's noticed.

Zillah, if your midwife's happy then it must be fine. Abdominal and pelvic floor exercises just sounded scary to me, and that's not immediately post-partum!!!

ok, new bits of new me... new dental regime, and I really do mean regime (think Cuba!). All the stuff I've been really slack about for too many years I now need to make up for, preferably so the hygienist doesn't make me bleed so much next visit!! Laughing out loud I expect the current level of obsession will wear off pretty fast though - it usually does, which is sad but normal.

can't think of anything else - I have DD upstairs timing and marking DS on his multiplication tables at the moment. Smiling I love this whole thing with the kids getting older and more independent - it means I can use them to do some of the things I don't want to do!! Evil

Those exercises

Submitted by Zillah on Mon, 01/14/2008 - 7:43am.

When to do them? It's a little easier when DH is home and I've still only managed them once. I find it very hard to find 10 minutes during the day and I'm tired in the evening. Hmmmmm. I think the evening is probably more likely, so I'll try and concentrate on locating a good moment. I also have some very attractive 'hold you all in' massive knickers to hold the muscles together, trying to get into them is an inelegant struggle Sticking out tongue

Honey, good work on getting rid of a 'Not so Nice' one. Hope you had a good time on the razz.

OW!!

Submitted by Kerri on Sat, 01/26/2008 - 1:47pm.

My teeth were virtually rebuilt from scratch by the dentist earlier this week and though he was extremely gentle my jaw is still extremely tender - he said it would be because of how close he had to get to the nerve. May have to put back my next appointment with the hygienist on Tuesday.

I've been testing the new Vaseline intensive balm on my eczema, and it's actually been working, so far. Sometimes a moisturiser will work to start with and then it will cause the same old problems. I've had unusually soft hands recently, which is always nice - I like it when my skin doesn't catch on my clothes! Smiling

there's nothing else to a new me, as my terminally messy living room and various desks can testify. What about anyone else's plans for the new year?? Anybody actually sticking with their goals?? How's WW going so far Honey? What about your foot Jo?? And you had some pretty sensible, achievable goals - how have you been getting on with those? Lenora? Anything at all??

Kerri.
