Laundry Problems

Hi...
I am experiencing discoloration of some laundry items, particularily the dark blues and blacks. I have been successfully laundering for over 35 years, and have never had this problem. The blue items have what looks like yellow spots, as if they have been in contact with bleach (which is not the case) and the black items come out with dark red areas. I have changed detergents, softeners, paid very good attention to temps and settings, but every once in awhile this happens. Any advice or help?

Usually red spots on black come from bleach, as well. But, you say there is no way your clothes could have bleach on them. Just out of curiosity, are you on city water? If this was a one time occurance, maybe the city increased it's chlorine for a bit to clean out before winter sets in. Our city usually warns us first (so we don't drink it...not that you could, you can smell the chlorine, blech) BUT, then they totally flush the system and ask us all to run water at a certain time and they increase the flow, to clean everything out.

I'm not a pro at this but maybe it could be something in your washing machine. or like she said it could be the water. Maybe you should try washing those colors at a near laundry mat and see whats the outcome.

I've heard that yellow, red or brown stains, generally come from iron in the water. The water, at some point, is coming in contact with rusty parts. The water source, a well, water heater or maybe the washer, itself.

The water is not nutralize, the yellow and red spot comes from the high acid in the water.
