The Corriedale Fleece

Lynn's picture

the fleece, post-washingHere's the Corriedale fleece I got in the yarn avalanche, all spread out in the sun on my landing to dry. It's about seven pounds worth--a little under, since Leslie says she washed up a few ounces of it a while ago.

It was bought at Black Sheep a couple of years ago, I think. Its tag says it was submitted for judging and that it's a ewe's fleece, but other than that, no identifier.

I wish I knew who the shepherd is, because this stuff is gorgeous. It had almost no vegetable matter in it, in fact, zero--what is in there is stuff that's blown onto it while drying. And it cleaned up into a blindingly white, next-to-the-skin soft cloud. I didn't get all of the lanolin out, which is fine as far as I'm concerned.

Take a look at this staple:

Corriedale locks
It's just gorgeous--have you seen wool this pretty lately? I haven't.

I think I'm going to save a couple of pounds undyed and dye up the rest in three or so batches. I may just flick the locks and spin them as-is.

Don't DYE IT!!

Oh, it's such a pretty white! I suppose if you have A LOT you'd want different colors, but of this batch, I'm seeing a beautiful white throw, perfectly knit, to have on the couch in the winter time. *Sigh*

nope

Those are mine. Ima took the pictures--she came right after you left, you guys just missed each other. Wanna help me dye it? I know Liz wants to. I thought I'd have a couple of dye days and send people home with fluff. While this is the nicest fleece I have--have ever had--I've got bucketloads more in the basement and it's time to get crackin'. I'm going to be really picky at OFFF this year. It's got to blow my socks off to get me to buy it.

This is what s/he's talking about. Doofus Tech Crunch boy, don't you know never to insult knitters? Well--he probably does now.

7 lbs is a lot of fleece

You're right, it would make a lovely throw, but it's SO SOFT I really want to make some sweaters from it. I'm thinking maybe 2 lbs white, and then batches of color in 3 1 lb-plus bunches. I've got a pokeberry plant ripening in the back yard, and Karen (earthmama) is an expert pokeberry dyer, so I may do a batch with that.
