Meeting with Ellen the Organizer

Ellen the Organizer came over today and we had a good long gabble and figured out what to do next to get me back on track. We figured out where my bottlenecks are: Work, dishes and laundry.

Work: I work too much. I've been worried about money. And I'm overwhelmed and it's easier for me to just dive in and do something I'm good at (writing) than look around the house and give up. Which leads to...

Dishes: Not having the dishes done throughout the day means I have a hard time getting dinner prepped at night and breakfast prepped in the morning. So before I do anything in the morning, if the kitchen isn't clean enough to function I have to take care of that first, and then get breakfast assembled ready to cook, before I open up the house and sit down to read email. You have no idea how hard this is going to be for me.

Laundry: My main concern with laundry is to make sure John has clean clothes without him having to wash them when he comes home from work. His commute means he is away from home nearly 12 hours a day, poor thing, and I don't want him to have to stay up half the night doing laundry. The bottleneck is getting stuff folded and put away. He often has clean laundry, he just doesn't know it.

This dovetails with his long-established habits, which are to get dressed and undressed in our spare bedroom, which also becomes piled with his stuff and makes me crazy. So we're moving his clothes into the spare bedroom, which has plenty of empty drawers, and I'm going to start doing his clothes separately so he always knows which basket is his in case I don't get things put away promptly enough.

We decided this is plenty for now. I'll keep this thread updated as I work on these three things.

Hmmm, the dishes/kitchen

Hmmm, the dishes/kitchen thing sounds alot like: FLYLADY!!! LOL!

Good luck! The home organizer thing seems to be a big crazy. There is even one in town here (only one. When she started, the paper did a story on her. She is also a real estate agent).

Yes, it does sound like fly lady.. because Fly lady works for so many people. me, I'm not a shiny sink person. Not at all. But, I do like having things neat. I've been on a few organizing groups for the past 4 or 5 years and have picked up lots of good advice. One is, as soon as you are done with an item, put it back were it belongs.. even if your not done with your project. Of course, that means you have to know where it belongs in the first place as well.

You have to learn in small steps to make keeping organized a habit and not something you do off and on.. (mostly off)

anyone with links to IKEA

will always have my vote!! Just came off the IKEA site by coincidence. My house is getting out of control since I started working - bills getting paid late (our phone has been cut off for the second time now, which is why most of my stuff is on direct debit these days!) and stuff everywhere.

and remember Lynn - babysteps!! Laughing out loud It sounds like you've made a good start in identifying those problem areas and need to have mastered the improvements before moving on. I shall have to keep that in mind because I always rush at things in m enthusiasm and then it just falls apart.

Good luck Lynn - I'm looking forward to hearing how you're getting on.

Kerri.

Ellen gets to go to both Media Day and Friends Day when they open in two weeks here!!! I could just die of jealousy. I canNOT wait until they open!

I am also a "rusher." I have a word for it but my brain is fogging right now. I go all-in and then it falls apart. I learned how not to do this in cardiac rehab, I can learn it here.
