Help - costume ideas?
At the school where I work, next week we are having a day when everyone has to come to school dressed as a character from a book. I need an idea I can more or less assemble from my exisiting wardrobe, with no sewing skills at all (don't have any skills, or much time). So far all I can think of is a witch - got a long black skirt, stripey socks, witch's hat and I think somewhere in the loft, a broomstick.
Any other brilliant ideas?

School Uniform
What about a role reversal? You could probably cobble together a school uniform - plenty of literary characters to choose from, from Tom Brown onwards.
No other brilliant ideas, I'm afraid!

how's about...
being invisible... and not turning up at all!!
Sorry - those are the kind of ideas my kids get given because I hate the whole costume thing. Try BHG.com, but watch out for the Halloween theme unless you *want* to go as a pumpkin!
Kerri.
I think a witch is
I think a witch is priceless! Especially with it such a big Harry Potter year (book 7, movie 5). Try being Professor McGonagal or Trelawny or Sprout? hehe, some poor woman could be Professor Umbridge (wouldn't the kids HATE her! LOL!).
Hmmm, with existing wardrobe is a challenge
If you had some wiggle room by scavenging for ideas at a Thrift Store (can't remember what you call those over there) it'd be dead easy.
Do you have access to a) crutches, b) a cane, or c) a wheelchair? If so you could go as Klara from Heidi or throw a dart at Charles Dickens for a like character.
I think the idea of Profs Trelawny or Sprout is super. Either one would be a hoot. Only drawback--there may be four other Trelawnys or Sprouts, too. Unless you happen to have a tartan about to make a McGonagal robe...my scottish heart thumps with glee...
Anything do to with a female character in Beatrix Potter would require a pinafore of somekind, so if you don't have something like that, that's out.
I'd probably end up being a bunny from Watership Down. Is there enough time for you to knit and felt a set of bunny ears and tail?!
Do let us know who you're going to be, this sounds fun!

If you could cover your witch hat with plaid you'd be there.

I can't remember what it
I can't remember what it said in the books, either. But in the movies her robes are dark green velvet, a black shirt w/ a brooch pinned at the neck, and a black hat.

Wow
Thanks for all your great ideas!
I think, however, I have settled on something silly, and very easy!....(drum roll).....
........The Cat in the Hat! I have one of those tall red and white striped hats somewhere in the loft. I'll wear black, paint whiskers and a little black nose on my face, make a tail by stuffing a pair of tights with newspaper or something, and wear red shoes and a red bow tie.
Not very highbrow, but the littlest ones will love it! (The school has 2-11 year olds).
Thanks again
Honey
Any chance of getting a photo of you
all duded up? At all?
I think Cat in the Hat is a great idea. Do you have a black umbrella to go with? He carried a black umbrella, right?
Have a great time!

I thought her whole robe was plaid,
but I'd have to crack open the a HP book to be sure and I'm not sure which box they're in.
