Baby on Board

: My friend often leaves her baby in the car alone while she runs into a store to buy something. Isn't this dangerous?
: Yes -- there is no circumstance where it would be appropriate to do this. The dangers of leaving a baby in a car alone are infinite and it only takes one second for disaster to strike. The baby could cry, for instance, and call attention to kidnappers. Or a carjacker could break in, try to escape quickly, and not notice a baby in the back until it is too late. There is also the possibility of the baby getting heat stroke -- especially if the car is left running and the weather is hot -- which can cause instant fatality.
Thankfully, there are states that prohibit -- by law -- leaving a baby alone in a car. Parents or guardians will face criminal charges for doing so as this falls under neglect. If you see a child alone in a car, notify authorities or call 911. And please stress to your friend that nothing good can ever come of leaving her baby in a car -- or anywhere alone.

Thank You!
Hi Nancy,
I just want to thank you for calling attention to this problem – some people just don’t realize what a danger it is to leave kids alone even if “its just for a second.” I also want to mention that I think your organization is so important. Thank you for all that you personally do and all that NCMEC does for families. Particularly, bringing to the forefront of the public’s mind all of the dangers that face children today – especially with internet predators. I’m so impressed with NetSmartz411.org – what a great initiative! Educating parents about how predators target kids online and the technology behind their methods is great. I think that is one of the main obstacles that parents face – they just don’t understand enough about the internet, social networks, and computers in general to know how to keep their kids safer online. Being able to use that site to get a response to a pressing question directly from one of the experts at your organization is awesome! I don’t know of another resource like that. So, I commend you and your organization and say keep up the good work!
