Job Interview--think good thoughts for me

Submitted by Anhata on Mon, 05/07/2007 - 4:31pm.

I've got a job interview tomorrow (Tuesday) morning for a phone sales rep postition.

The call center is actually fairly closeby, only 10 minutes away. Add to that the flexible working hours and the whole phone thing (which is so easy and fun for me that I can hardly believe I can get paid to talk on the phone) and I'm jonesing for the job.

Wish me luck!

Went well, but there's a catch

Isn't there always?

The man wanted to offer me the job on the spot. Still does.

Problem is, turns out that it's a conservative Christian outfit that actively lobbies the anti-abortion, abstinence-only, anti-gay/lesbian rights postitions, etc. The quick research I did on the company before I went to the interview didn't pull any of this up. They're very careful on the website not to mention any of this and look politically neutral.

A little bit of digging today after I got home pulled up some more info about the company's activities around recent legislation lobbying and such. And it's all directly counter to my personal and spiritual beliefs.

It's a little convoluted, but my choices are basically

a) don't take the job

b) take the job and occasionally take unpaid leaves of absences when the issue or organization is one I cannot support. They have let employees do that in the past.

I just can't see how I can take the job in good concience. I'm really upset about it, too. We need the money. Bad.

With option "b" I'd have to tithe 10% off the top of each paycheck and sink it into groups actively working to counter this employer. It'd be the only way I could deal with it.

But I don't think even then that I could do it without a crisis of concience. With a little more digging today after I got home I found out more about the owners and it's not good.

Mind you, the interviewer was very up-front about the company's conservative Christian agenda and I was up-front about my liberal views. And he still wanted to hire me.

This'll learn me to not do deep research into a company before applying.

Aw Darn it Anhata - I'm really sorry. I don't think you would be happy there though. There has GOT to be something out there for you -
