Can't Win for Losing

Talking with an online friend today, who is having some serious family trouble with her daughter. Perhaps, she says, life would be better if she gave up the job and stayed home.

Talking with a different friend today, who is having some serious family trouble with her daughter. Perhaps, she said, things would be better if she could go out and work and show her kid a different way of life.

Talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't. No matter what happens with our kids, it's our life choices as women that bear the brunt of the blame. If we stay home with them, we're smothering and feeding an unrealistic fantasy lifestyle and (you know the drill) If we work outside the home, we're neglecting them and being greedy and (you know the drill)

Very frustrating. My life is better because I'm home with the kids -- but I also work 60+ hours a week. It's a bizarre hybrid of the two, and sometimes it works and sometimes I scream like a psycho. Is "I'll take you outside when I get another 500 words written" any better than "I'll take you outside when I get home from the park"?

Tim is talking about homeschooling. This discussion is spurred by the recent school shooting in VA - -terrifying -- but I don't know how to make that decision.

Also: I saw on here that some of y'all are looking for frugal ways to get language lessons like Rosetta Stone -- many universities offer free lecture classes online with resource materials. Google Open Courseware and you might be able to find what you're looking for for free.

Also: I am putting together that trip itenerary, am just further behind than I thought I'd be. I didn't forget!

Every family situation is

Every family situation is different. And you can only do what is best for your own family. For mine, it's staying home and working on the farm. I think farm kids grow up with pretty good values and a strong work ethic. It's also my goal to keep them as busy as possible. Between sports and 4-H, I don't think I'll have a problem. If I keep them busy enough, they will be too busy and tired to think about getting into trouble (both with the law and with getting knocked up). At least, that is my plan.

That said, my oldest and I have some bad days. She is 9 (going on 16. I'd say 13, but she knows how to drive both my automatic pickup and my stick shift feed truck. Not by herself of course). And hormones are kickin' in. It's only a matter of time before Aunt Flo is making a couple visits to this household, I fear. Yesterday she was CRANKY. But today much better.

If you are serious about homeschooling, you will get plenty of support and advice from this group here. I'm not one of them (I don't oppose it, just don't want it for my family). But homeschool kids still grow up and go to college.

You just have to do what is best for your own family. Working at home is a great solution!
