It's a gorgeous day here in Portland, and I'm thinking about gardens and plants and such. My lilacs are blooming, a big springtime treat for me, and I just finished weaving in all the willow branches budding out of the living archway. So I loved finding Victory Gardens 2007+ via the really great new blog Sew Green.

There's snow on the ground here!

But I am looking forward to the blooming of the lilacs in my neck of the woods in a few weeks' time. And I'm dreaming and scheming about my victory garden. Over the years, I have built a succession of raised beds, and I hope to add a few more this spring. I'll be planting lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, green beans, onions, cabbage, sunflowers ... and whatever else catches my fancy!

Are you still raising chickens, Lynn?

yes

In fact we just got a new "girl," who we've named Penny for her lovely copper feathers. So far she's kept inside the hen house, and the other three are not friendly to her when she tries to come out. Sad

Poor chicken. She's a survivor of a vicious raccoon attack that killed the other four members of her original flock, and then she comes here and the girls gang up on her. We're giving her two weeks to get integrated into the flock before we give her back.

We are going to venture into

Submitted by jennye on Fri, 04/06/2007 - 3:52pm.

We are going to venture into chickens this year too. Well, we have one. That's been living in a cage in the garage. DD7 brought her home after her class hatched them in school on Valentine's day. I'm trying to find time to make a yard/henhouse cleaned out for her, but between DS1 and the weather I just haven't been able to do it. DH flat out told me he wasn't helping with the 4-H ventures we are doing, that he doesn't have the time to fart around with that stuff, so I'm kinda going it alone. Both the girls are doing chickens for 4-H, so I need about a dozen. Both for eggs and for the fair. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to make sure that my dog, cats, screech owls and hawks won't get into them.

And DD9 will also be doing the dairy heifer project, so I need to get those bought and work on teaching her how to bottle feed and halter break them (2 of them) so she can show them in the fair as well.

Have fun with your garden! Oh, yeah, both girls are doing the veggee garden projects for 4-H as well. Maybe with their help I won't let the weeds take over! LOL!

Chickens!

Here is a neat article about building a portable chicken coop (chicken tractor).

This month's Mother Earth News has an article about building a chicken habitat using a barn-style doghouse, wire fencing, and hog rings.

Poor single chicken, I hope she gets some buddies soon. Chickens like to be in flocks of at least three. They're not too much work, you should have fun with them. I just sit out there and watch them sometimes; it's relaxing.

I want to garden NOW!

I am not dealing well with the extra snow drifting around the yard.

Think I'll visit the blog while looking at all these lovely seed packets piled up taunting me from my office shelf.
