Video of the Day: How to Be a Gardener

Alan Titchmarsh explains it all for you in a 4-hour series from the Beeb, and by "explains it all" I mean just that: The how-to that is often missing in gardening programs. Who knows how long it'll be up at Google Video, so watch while you can. Titchmarsh, you will remember, was long a presenter on the British "Ground Force" garden make-over show.

I Heart Titchmarsh!

I love how he'd quote poetry and prose off the cuff on Ground Force...he's my Master Gardener hero. I've missed him so much since he left GF and then since I dropped the BBC America channel on my satellite...it's so good to see him again! Thanks, Lynn!

How do you view the rest of the series? The Google video has the first installment, but I can't see how to view the next few episodes...I've flipped around a bit at the BBC websites, but nothing yet.

There are two books based on that series - How to be a Gardener Books One and Two. Currently on my wish list for next Christmas Smiling

I adore Alan Titchmarsh, even though my Dad says he dyes his hair Big grin

Alan swears he does not!

I remember a Ground Force episode where someone accused him of dyeing his hair and he swears that he does not! I personally could care less either way, whatever color hair he sports, he's a jewel.

Would BBC stop using him as a presenter if he went grey? I shouldn't think so, but what do I know? Not much.

I've watched the first three installments and they're fantastic. I want those books, too, Honey!

Alan Titchmarsh books

Submitted by Kerri on Thu, 03/15/2007 - 3:46pm.

I gave someone a book he wrote this last Christmas... oh yes, A Christmas Anthology. I was shocked to find that he hadn't merely edited it but had written the whole thing and illustrated it beautifully himself with watercolours. It was a lovely little book (amazon.co.uk) and unusual to find an book for Christmas so I snapped it up.

he started off as a bit of a joke but he's managed to stay the course somehow and now he's a British gardening institution. Just as well since the previous one died and left us with a really weird mix of gardening presenters. Honey - you know that awful woman who presents sometimes on Gardener's World and did Chelsea? And of course everyone's least favourite Monty B Don (the B stands for B***dy - that's what my mother always calls him anyway!). Joe Swift is quite sweet though.

speaking of BBC presenters going grey - I saw Mark Curry on BBC Breakfast today for the first time in probably 15yrs, and my was that a shock! So no, I don't think they'd stop using Alan Titchmarsh at the BBC if he went grey. If you work at the BBC it just makes you distinguished!

Oh dear... I fear you're all going t need a lot of translation for this thoroughly British post. I'm still getting to grips with who's still around and who's not and who's come from nowhere in the last few years as far as British television is concerned. Some of it is an unpleasant shock (whatsisface Brand at the Brit Awards! - ick!).

I'll stop now... I really should've gone to bed hours ago.

Kerri.
