Greetings from Edinburgh

Well, here we are! We've been in our new flat for three weeks now and we FINALLY have the internet, so I can catch up with you guys Smiling

The move up here was very stressfull, especially as I submitted my thesis two days after DH came up here with half of our stuff and 4 days before DBestFriend and I drove the rest of our stuff up. The day after I arrived I was utterly wiped out, and it took me a week to recover!

Our flat is a pretty typical Edinburgh flat - high ceilings, good sized rooms, nice plasterwork and fireplace (doesn't work, unfortunately) and its well decorated and fitted. The location is very central, you can see the castle if you come out of our front door. However, there's not much in the way of community right around here. It seems to be mainly populated by young professionals, migrant workers, actors and students. It makes for a very interesting area, fantastic food shops and great looking restaurants, but not much in the way of other young families. However, DD and I are starting to check out the swings, toddler groups etc, so hopefully things will emerge!

I'm slowly catching up with all the things that have been happening around here. Honey, JJ - fantastic news on the jobs!

Now all that I have to do is unpack the boxes . . .

How cool! Isn't that where

How cool! Isn't that where JK Rowling lives? Maybe you'll "bump" into her at the park or something. LOL!

The flat sounds great! Can you get the fireplace working? I'd love a real fire, hypothetically anyway. In reality I suspect I wouldn't like the work Big grin I have a little gas fire with coals and real flames, so it's the next best thing. Don't need it really, as we have central heating, but there is nothing like a fire for cosiness.

Glad you're settling in well. I bet you were glad to see the back of that thesis too! When do you get your results/marks whatever the term is?

Honey.

Love Edinburgh!

Oh... that's just about one of my favorite cities in the world! I spent a really fantastic summer there when I was in college. I don't think I've walked so much since. I just wanted to cover every inch I could. The only downside that summer was that my flat was across the street from a fishmonger's. That's a smell I could live without.

It pains me to think about how many years ago that was now...

Hope you feel settled soon.

Yes Jenny, we live about 15 minutes walk from where JK Rowling lives. Mind you, I don't think I actually know what she looks like, so I won't be much good at spotting her!

Honey, the room is carpeted right up to the fireplace and I don't think the landlord would take to kindly to us peeling it back ;0

Angel, I'm walking too. We decided to give up our car when we moved here - everything is so close to everything else, and the buses are pretty good. We have just joined a car club, where you pay a monthly fee, plus an hourly or daily rate when you want to use a car. The great thing is that the cars are parked on the streets around the city, so there's no hassle to get to one. Very cool idea. Hope it works!

So envious of you, Zillah! Spent a week there in '98 and loved every minute. Are you living in the new town area then? I can't imagine many places in the old town where you'd have a view of the Castle.

Best wishes for settling in and getting to know your way around town. I highly recommend Tipoo Sahib restaurant if they're still there, very excellent Indian food. You'll have to let me know if they still put up the lighted Christmas greetings in different languages in the streets around the holidays, that was lovely.

It was so long ago that my info on restaurants and area attractions is probably out of date. But if you haven't been to the Castle yet, go soon! It's got a real portcullis, how cool is that?! (An American geeking out about castles, here.) I went twice and still didn't see everything. I highly recommend day trips, too. We also visited the Housestead Fort on Hadrian's wall, Dumfries, Loch Lomond, the Western Highlands, Kilmartin Glen, Oban, and journeyed up the Great Glen--Glen Coe, Ben Nevis, Loch Ness. I don't know if you've toured Scotland before, but any of those places is a must-see. I just wish we'd had time to linger in Oban, Inverness, Perth, St. Andrews....I clearly need another visit over there! Sigh.

Do I ever wish I lived there, too!

Castle View

Submitted by Zillah on Tue, 02/06/2007 - 12:43pm.

Anhata, if you think of Prince's Street, the Gardens and the Castle as the border between the Old in the south and New Town in the north, we are just at the very north of the Old Town. The Castle is literally at the bottom of our street! I went in many years ago on a romantic weekend visit with DH (before he was DH!), haven't been since we moved here. I think I'll probably wait until we have a visitor who wants to go, although I am also a castle geek.

As for further out, I know some of the west coast pretty well - several times staying at the Abbey on Iona, camping in the Western Isles, sailing around the area - but the rest I don't know well at all. Looking forward to a bit more light and warmth to start exploring! I'd love to walk some of Hadrian's Wall.
