The New Homemaker Newsletter for December 01, 2008

Dear Readers,

Hey, guess what! We upgraded the site again! And by "we" I mean me. :) It's worth it, though. The new version repairs some real breaks in the software, and adds some really nice features that I hope will make your experience at TNH that much better. Quick highlights:
  • The return of images! You can now upload images and videos (yes, videos!) and organize them into albums.
  • An easy link to bookmark individual pages at TNH in your browser.
  • A quick theme toggle so if you want the old "page in the center" view of the site, you can get that without knowing how to edit your account. I'll keep maintaining that alternate view for those of you who don't like the new "page on the left" format.
  • The return of the "buddy list." Think of it as TNH's own MySpace. You can also easily invite friends to TNH now.
  • You can now get notified by email if anyone comments on a post you've made.
On the back end the upgrade gives me some tools that make it easier to run the site as well, and I won't bore you with all that. :) Things I hope to add soon are a better chat area, a site tour, and a user brownie points system--the more you do on the site, the more points you get. I'm waiting until I come up with something to reward the users with! Right now all I've got is a nifty badge. :) But that's all technical stuff, really. It's not why you come to TNH. You come to TNH for the nuts-and-bolts of running a home, and for support. I've got a few things in mind along those lines as well. Expect to see some illustrated read-aloud stories for the children, some commentary on the (de)value of women's work and more from the TNH Test Kitchen. :)

Beat Insomnia Now

Sleep can be an elusive thing. Experience a couple nights of tossing and turning in bed, and it's all too tempting to reach for a sleep aid. But before you do, consider that several recent studies conducted at major institutions all over the country show that, despite their ordinary nature, simple behavioral strategies--like going to bed at the same time every night and avoiding afternoon naps--really do work. What's more, over-the-counter sleep medications can leave you feeling sluggish the next day, and "there’s very little evidence that these sleep aids actually result in significant sleep," says Mark Mahowald, M.D., director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis.

What about prescription sleep drugs? For acute, short-term insomnia--such as that brought on by a stressful event, like a death in the family--experts say these medications can help. "In fact, by treating acute short-term insomnia [with prescription sleep aids] when it first occurs, we can actually prevent the development of long-term insomnia," says Dr. Mahowald. But for the occasional sleepless night, consider the following 10 tips. You may find they help you get to sleep just as well as popping a pill!
