Pumpkin Pie Question

I am going to be baking for Christmas dinner. Among other things, I will be making 2 pumpkin pies. I usually bake one pie at a time. If I put both in the oven at the same time, does it take the same amount of baking time? Would it be better to just bake one at a time? I have room for 2 pies on the same rack or I can use 2 racks.

Add a little time
More stuff in the oven means a little more time for everything.

My experience
Maybe it's my recipe, but when I do 2 pies at a time it takes much much longer. As long as you cover the crust with foil at a certain point to avoid overbrowning, that doesn't matter. Just be sure you allow yourself extra time -- I've stayed up very late and had to wait on other cooking because I didn't plan on the extra time!
I set mine side by side.

together's fine
though it will take longer because you've essentially doubled the recipe, it's more time and energy efficient to bake them together for 20-30 minutes longer that usual than to bake them seperately. My mom always baked two pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas, one pumpkin and one pecan pie and always cooked them together, no problem.
Have you ever doubled the recipe for something, like brownies, and found that it took 20+ minutes longer to cook? Same priciple working here. More volume takes longer to heat up to the right temp.

PUMPKIN PIE
I always bake both pies in the same oven, no matter what the variety. But....yes, you will need to extend the baking time by at least 10-15 minutes. In the case of pies, I take a crust protector ring and put it around the pie after the 15 minutes of early baking (I believe it's 425 for 15 min. if memory serves me correctly). By putting this protector around the crust when you turn the oven to 350-375, you pretty much eliminate the over-baking of the crust since the pies will be in the oven longer. My advise: After approx. 10 minutes of additional baking time, check the pies and keep a close watch (5 minute intervals?) because it really doesn't take that much longer w/two as opposed to just one pie but does take a little longer. Good Luck!
