I may be country,

but I ain't THAT country! LOL!! Nope. I'll just go on down to my local grocery store and buy a bird down there if I ever need to. LOL!! Sorry, I'm a bit lazy. teeheehee. I think it's the smell part that totally turned me off to raising my own bird. Heck, after that, I may not even attempt to try chickens, if only for eggs. Nope, give me big ol' cows anyday. At least I don't have to butcher and process them (I pay someone else to worry about that for me).

That was one big bird, though. Looks like plenty of dark meat for me should I ever drop in on those folks. LOL!

My hens don't smell--much--but then I use them for eggs, not meat. Smiling As long as you're not dealing in dozens or hundreds, hens aren't a big deal. We only have three and they're not hassle at all.

I think there are a few people thankful not to be me today.

jennye, raising birds doesn't stink, scalding them and dressing them out does. Eye-wink

Feed?

Nothing special. He ate the same things our chickens and goats ate, different types of seeds and grains. He had access to all the grass he wanted and seemed to love apples and used coffee grounds. We didn't expect him to get that big.

no missing goats??

that turkey looked big enough to have finished one and still had space for dessert! You must have a HUGE oven too!!!

the only time I had to do something even remotely like that was when I bought a whole chicken in Singapore, which inevitably came with head and feet attached. I ended up phoning my mother in the UK for suggestions, and only once I'd covered the head as she told me could I hack the head off. And this chicken was not struggling much! Laughing out loud So hats off to you Phelan, for getting that bird dealt with but also for having the guts to kill your own food - not sure my principles would stand up to that much scrutiny.

Kerri.

my oven isn't that big, but we did a dry run earlier, looks like it will fit with an inch to spare.

We only managed to eat half a breast, and that was divided by 7 people. I am getting really creative with all the leftovers. Laughing out loud

turkey pot pie

Submitted by Anhata on Wed, 12/06/2006 - 12:11am.

this was my favorite turkey day leftover meal. My mom had the BEST recipe for the top crust and the pie filling was rich and thick...hers was the very best pot pie, ever. Have no idea which cookbook she got the recipe from though. It could have been the old Sunset one, or the BH&G.

We just finished off the leftovers from our 24 lb. turkey yesterday. Not including the broth I made from the turkey carcass. Still have some of that still in the freezer. It's delicious, let me tell you what.

I'm the only one that eats turkey leftovers, and I was turkeyed out a while back. My puppy and 7 cats will feast on the rest today. LOL!
