Honey on the carpet

Submitted by Kellyandboys on Tue, 11/07/2006 - 6:14am.

My sister, who lives in another state, was talking to me this morning and made an awful noise. She left her husband to watch 2 of the children over the weekend and is just now finding HONEY UNDER THE DINING ROOM TABLE. It's on her carpet and it appears that the innocent 3 year old tried to cover up his mess with some newspapers. I have read a few bits of info saying to use hot water and blot it and that is great but is that for a fresh spill or one that has been allowed to sit for possibly 3 days?

EEK! Funny how things like

EEK! Funny how things like that happen while the wife is away, isn't it! LOL!

I would second the water idea. I'm wondering if it is that old and hardened a bit, maybe use a hairdryer to soften it up? Not sure, I haven't had that happen (yet).

And for future spills, put a cheap area rug under the table. I got a whole set of rugs one time for about $50 a few years back (one for dining room, one coffee table, and one hearth). Every few months, I take the dining room table one outside and hose it down good, let it dry in the sun, and it's like new.

I will have to give her the idea of the area rugs, she has 5 and 2 are of them are toddlers.... even still the other 3 are almost just as messy as the toddlers as they go 6,7,and then 8....
Thanks for the hair dryer idea

I only have 4 that qualify

I only have 4 that qualify to be children by gov't standards (9, 7, 4, and almost 1). But my husband qualifies as a fifth child and can be just as bad, if not worse, than all the other kids put together!!! LOL!

Get it warm.

If you warm it, then wet it and wipe it up you'll have better luck. We keep honey in the 40 pound buckets in our basement and even if it hardens, we scrape out what we need and warm it. It gets runny again. I don't believe honey ever actually dries so hard that it is never liquifiable again, as I read that there was honey found in Egyptian tombs that was still good once warmed--I'm not advocating she eat the stuff once she gets it off, I'm just saying I think it'll be just as fine as a fresh spill if she warms it.

I was just telling my sister

I was just telling my sister your suggestion, and I had to add....... ya know they found honey in Egyptian tombs that was still good once warmed, so after you warm it up just use a knife and put it on some toast.... Smiling
