--Is the sexy costume thing for women driving you nuts this Halloween? If you don't mind four-letter words, this fake commercial for Girls's Costume Warehouse is hysterical. Again: THERE ARE FOUR LETTER WORDS IN THE COMMERCIAL. If this is a problem for you, or you're at work, don't click. And the whole costume thing makes me crazy. "Sexy pope! Sexy lobster!" [via]

--The ozone hole over the Antarctic is bigger than ever. Human-produced gases are destroying the ozone that protects us from the deadlier forms of solar radiation. yay team. [via]

--The Sierra Club reminds parents to watch out for lead in Halloween toys and props. Hat tip to Asha.

--And while we're on the subject of children's health, mumps is on the rise in the US, with nearly 6,000 cases reported this year. The average age was 22, and the majority of cases were in women. Calls for vaccinating against mumps more aggressively are out, which leads me to ask: do you vaccinate your kids?

Halloween Costumes

Hello,
I am brand new to this site, and am not sure what to make of the link to the "Sexy Costume" blog. I was very offended and disgusted. . did I miss something? I thought I was on a nice wholesome sight with wholesome and handy homemaking ideas.

Did you not read the warnings?

Submitted by Lynn on Thu, 10/26/2006 - 5:25pm.

I gave not one but TWO warnings about the language in that link--one of them in capital letters. So apparently, yeah, you missed something. Smiling

There's been a lot of discussion lately about Halloween costumes for women--about how everything these days is sexy this and sexy that. You can't be a nurse, you have to be a SEXY nurse. You can't be a firefighter, you have to be a SEXY firefighter. That fake commercial was a great send-up of that trend, so I linked to it.

I don't link to nudity or overt sexuality, ever.

If you were disgusted by it, I'm sorry, but I warned you. I OVER-warned you.

In the site's editorial content I try to provide information and support for homemakers from a feminist perspective. In the blog portion of the site, the "Diary," it's all about me and what I find interesting, infuriating or funny. Occasionally, if something's of interest but the language is rough, I'll link to it anyway but I'll warn people, because not everyone shares my tolerance for language. That's what I did here.

Is this site wholesome? I don't know. I've never aimed for wholesome. I've never aimed for offensive. I've aimed for an accurate reflection of myself in the Diary section, and the concerns of my audience in the editorial section.

HI Lynn -
Yes, the sexy thing makes me crazy too, but I have to admit that commercial gave me a much-needed chuckle this am. That guy hawking the costumes is priceless!

I got a good laugh from that too. ".... and Frog."
Also, "Sexy Mental Patient."

This year, I am going to be "Sexy Middle-Aged Frump Handing Out Candy from a Dirty Front Porch."

That commercial was hillarious. Smiling

The mumps again? I remember we had an outbreak in my junior high school, years ago. Turned out that a batch of the MMR vaccine had been ineffective and we all had to get another shot.

Lead in toys--thank you Wal-Mart

Submitted by Anhata on Sat, 10/28/2006 - 9:28pm.

That's so crazy, I can hardly believe that companies and retailers would sell products containing lead to children. Some have agreed to stop selling children's jewelry containg lead, but only in California. However, Wal-Mart has is not among them. I'm shocked! Shocked and amazed that Wal-Mart is on the wrong side of this! (NOT)

Lead in soft vinyl lunchboxes. The top of my head is about to blow off.

I have to stop now before I end up on a long rant.
