I hope...

Submitted by Jilsyt on Sun, 10/22/2006 - 10:19am.

I hope my parents don't see that Dr. Phil!! They are already against me homeschooling as it is. Each time my mom calls and asks if the kids are excited to get ready for school, the busride, new classmates, etc. My kids are still young, and I always have to remind ind them they go to Mommy school, and once in awhile accompany dad to his "big school" (college). All I need is another negative reinforcement for her!! I think (finally) my mother-in-law gets it, as she spent 6 days with us, and could see the progress my 3 year old had already made on his own--no pressure or curriculum from a pre-school. He has friends (her greatest fear), and is quite a nice kid, for his age. I mean, jee, he's only 3!! He doesn't need to be "socialized"!!!

I've been disenchanted w/Dr. Phil for a while now

Submitted by Anhata on Sun, 10/22/2006 - 11:21pm.

Ever since I saw him cut off a mom at the knees. She was nearly desperate with worry because her husband was psycho-strict with their children. She even brought video tape showing him going all Gestapo on their perfectly well behaved, sweet, charming children. Dr. P totally went after her and told her it was her problem and she had to get over it. After that I stopped listening to the Dr.

I can't stand watching those kinds of shows anyway for the exact reason that they so often appear to be manipulative, exploitative, and often rampantly biased. I'm not shocked to find out Dr. Phil's show is no different.

Libel

Submitted by Jilsyt on Mon, 10/23/2006 - 12:12pm.

Also, just wondering, if any of you know the whole legal reason, why don't these shows (or their hosts, or managers, whatever) get arrested for Libel which is a misrepresentation of a person? I mean, there are teenagers in jail for putting up a myspace page with their principals name on it, why not go after a guy who makes homeschoolers and nursers look like idiots without cause?

the legal standard for libel

Submitted by Lynn on Mon, 10/23/2006 - 12:32pm.

I think the alleged MySpace cases wouldn't be libel so much as punitive actions taken against students with limited rights. Is anyone really sitting in jail who hasn't made an actual threat against a school official? Or have they just been suspended? --ah, I found it. In this case the kid was making a threat to blow up his school on his MySpace page. A different matter entirely.

As for Dr. Phil, editing things to make people look bad is different from outright saying someone IS bad, or that they did something they didn't do. The whole point of going on Dr. Phil, one could argue, is to get Phil's advice. If you don't like Phil's OPINION of you, well, tough. That's the (shaky but legal) defense.

The simple Solution

Submitted by JJ on Mon, 10/23/2006 - 2:44pm.

is to NOT watch his show.

And if someone asks you about his show, tell them you don't watch it and why.

Ratings determine wether or show lives or dies. If you and your friends don't watch the show it will disappear in short order.

AND: if you are vocal about why you don't like the show, people will take notice. The truth of the matter is that people remember negatives far easier than they retain a positive.

I don't bother watching him. his voice just kinda gets on my nerves. If I am gonna watch silly daytime fare, I'll stick to Jerry Springer. At least his show is *entertaining* (in addition to being horribly tasteless.)

Yeah, I think I caught one episode of Springer at my mom's house once. Funny, but had the kids with me, so turned it off. I don't watch much TV (it's in the closet, unplugged until needed), so I wonder how much credibility I'd have among friends if I commented on a show (oh, well).
