Novice Knitter Needs Help!

Yes, I started knitting almost 4 years ago, but considering the 2-year hiatus, I'm a novice.

Here is where I'm stuck:

I'm knitting a little 3-6 mo. size baby sweater.

I was just finishing the back piece and was doing the shape shoulders section. Carefully (I thought) I followed the instructions and cast off 9 stitches at the beginning of the next two rows. Then I counted -- OK, I had 61 stitches, less 18 should leave me with -- accckkkk!

Reading the instructions again, I see that I should have been casting off *10* stitches for the size that I was doing.

So I thought to myself, well, I have to do another two rows of casting off, so I could just do 11. But then I thought, is that going to screw me up totally for attaching the shoulders to the front pieces? Would I then cast off 11 stitches instead of 10 for the right front and the left front?

Well, this seemed very perplexing to me, so I decided I had better just go back two rows. My little Vogue guide suggests that I go stitch by stitch for just two rows. Well, that's fine except -- I bound off the ends of those rows.

So, my query:

1. Could I get away with my minor revision to the pattern, providing I have the same number of stitches to match up at the shoulder seams?

2. If not, how do I unravel the bound off parts? (See, I am really a novice.)

Please help!

unraveling a bind-off

You need to go all the way back. Unraveling a bind-off is the same as unraveling anything. You haven't cut any threads, right? When you get to the bound-off stitches that need undoing, just pull them back over the stitch you're on--bind off in reverse. Seriously, just try it. It should be pretty obvious.

Can I jump in here? I found

Can I jump in here? I found some videos on the web and I sat watching these things over and over. I do a very simple cast on where you just twirl it on your finger and stick the needle through the back. I do a simple throw knit. I haven't figured out the purl or the cast off. And a pattern??? Forget it. So to all those teachers out there Help!!!! And if anyone could send some good links. I do better with a video than a flat instruction booklet.
I'm also loom knitting. I have a very long pink wind sock type thing but have no idea what to do with it, or even how to take it off the loom. LOL
But man I am having some great fun. And my husband is also liking this a lot. I put the girls in bed, strip off all my clothes, climb into our bed and grab the needles. I sit naked with my needles while my hubby is on the computer. "I love your new hobby!!!" LOL Yes yes he does!!!
