Old Grease

AxMoExLoIxA's picture

I know this doesn't belong here... but I have a huge problem!! WE just moved into another house. The people that lived here before us had left old coffee cans full of cooking oil and fat on the back porch. The oils and fats spilled EVERYWHERE. I CAN NOT get it to come up. Any advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

what did it leak *into*?

If it's wood, you are flat out of luck.

You can remove some oil from wood, but only that which is on the surface. get down below, and the fats find their way into the fibers and won't come out. Best bet, if its wood, is to sand the surface, and then prime it with Kilz or a zprimer, and then paint over it. If its somethig else, I would suggest scraping it up, then spraying with a detergent, letting it sit, then wiping it up. lather, repeat Sad

Good luck!

cement

If it's on cement, try kitty litter. Pour it onto the spot, then grind the spot with your foot. Allow it to absorb all the oil it can, then sweep it up. The Queen of Clean (I looked it up!) says to do this for several weeks whenever you think of it.

Good luck!

baking soda

Baking soda sprinkled on oil spills will lift up the grease and make it easily brush or sweep away. It sounds like you need to invest in a few boxes of it if it is big spill. Dump liberally over spill and let sit 10 minutes to soak up. Use paper towels to scrub in the baking soda to absorb more until it is to wet and is just rubbing around. Repeat the baking soda layer and let soak in until you have just solid pieces of baking soda left and it does not feel oily underneath. Brush into a dust pan at this point. Spray area with straight distilled vinegar to remove baking soda residue.
