Just took my 1st First Aid class. Have a CPR class scheduled for next week. I find it terrifying that I have lived this long-and that my son has lived 16 months-without my having acquired this information. Why don't the schools teach this stuff?

Some schools do....

Submitted by lgunnoe on Wed, 08/09/2006 - 4:58am.

Scouts certainly do! My DDS have had basic first aid training since 1st grade (What to do if...., scrapes sprains, bruises, etc.) and my older DD (almost 16) has advanced training and adult and infant/child CPR. I have to update my 1st aid training every 3 years and my CPR every year....just to be a Leader!

As for schools:
I will do a basic "household first aid"/choking unit in all Nutrition and Wellness classes at school a unit in Lifeskills/Life Planning class, too, and a more detailed section on responding to children in Child Development/Parenting (including child CPR taught by Red Cross trainers.) These are electives in most high schools, though....you gotta choose them!

Congratulations on completing your training! I agree that it is something that EVERYONE should do!

Blessings,
Lenora

The American Heart Association now offers Family and Friends CPR kits.

From the aforementioned link:

Family & Friends CPR Anytime is a self-directed, personal CPR kit that makes learning the core skills of CPR easy, convenient, affordable and fun for the whole family. It takes just 22 minutes to learn and can be done anywhere.

This in-home kit does not provide a certificate, but it is a good starting point, especially for busy moms who might not have time to go out to a longer course.

DH is taking a CPR class

Submitted by jennye on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 7:05am.

DH is taking a CPR class tonight. It's a prerequisite for the EMT-Basic class he starts at the community college at the end of the month. He wants to get his EMT Basic and Intermediate for our volunteer fire dept, so he can help out more on ambulance runs (though he does enjoy driving it with all the lights and sirens wailing. LOL!)
