"Top" Female Circumcisers in Sierra Leone Abandon the Trade

And they burned their instruments, too. The fifteen unnamed women were responsible, the government thinks, for up to a third of the so-called operations in their part of Sierra Leone. The procedure is truly horrific. It ranges from the merely awful to the out-and-out barbaric; read the Wikipedia entry for the whole story, I was going to tell you more right here but I was getting woozy just typing it out. There's a worldwide campaign to end this practice, and that these fifteen African women are abandoning their trade gives me hope that some day the women in these "traditional" cultures will some day be free of it entirely.

This is very good news. I've even heard that some doctors here in the States will perform this procedure on little girls. It is indeed horrific. Female circumcision can kill little girls when done under the conditions that most poor in Africa and East Asia live under. It certainly maims them and for absolutely NO legitamate reason.
