Howz it Growing?

My silly little deck garden is growing and producing like crazy! We've had several cucumbers with several more ready today, I made pesto, (we didn't love it Sticking out tongue ), I'm snipping chives and parsley into everything, my rosemary is lovely, both of my tomato plants (one roma, one cherry) are full-to-bursting (but not red yet) and my peppers....OHHHHH my bell peppers! Big grin

I think the "containers" have served well with all the rain/flooding we've had this summer. I have one friend whose garden has drainage built in and her garden still sat wet for such a long stretch that it's not producing well.

Next year I'm adding some greens, garlic and onions, and oregano....I'll have a "pizza-and-salad" garden! Laughing out loud

sorry Lenora - couldn't resist! Laughing out loud

I have one pot of tomatoes which are going red, amazing since the plant itself looks like it suffered from drought conditions. My nasturtiums have blackfly so any dreams I might have cerished about making salad with them is well and truly gone. I'm not especially organic - just too lazy to spray! Eye-wink No but seriously I'm trying to avoid most of the chemical stuff in the garden so no surprise I get blackfly and bindweed to contend with.

I have a similar problem with drainage to you I think Lenora - the whole back garden was like a swimming pool through the winter. Might try for more pots next year, but only if I can be sure I'll make the effort to water them. Tell me about this summer's crop again next spring when I'm looking to plant and I will really apprecate the inspiration! Smiling

Container Gardening

for us this year as well. Our tomatoes are coming on pretty well, none red yet, but they're looking promising! DD has an enormous sunflower that she planted that looks as if it might flower soon. I think it's amazing, she's utterly unimpressed Sticking out tongue The other main thing we've done this year has been herbs. Good ones have been basil, rosemary, lavender, winter savory, chervil, sorrel, thyme, oregano, chives, rose geranium. Those that need to work harder next year are oregano and mint. Miserable failures of the year are all my parsley plants, which have either been slug eaten or just plum refused to grow more than two inches high Laughing out loud

I wish I'd done courgettes in grow bags this year, I miss their big cheerful leaves!

Sore subject

The radishes bolted and the broccoli, carrots and lettuce all disappeared completely overnight several weeks ago, eaten by slugs or snails I assume Sticking out tongue
The flower seeds I sowed (about thirty packets!) completely failed to come up at all, except for three solitary plants.

Obviously, seeds and me do not mix. I do quite well with plants, but I am Never Planting Seeds Again Big grin Too much trouble, not enough reward.

Herbs

I planted rosemary, basil, mint, oregano, and sage in pots this year. This is my first try with herbs and they are doing very well. I snip fresh herbs into everything now! I planted 7 tomato plants and have quite a few green tomatoes. My garden spot seems to get enough sun, so next year more things will be added. Smiling

Abundance

This morning, I strolled out to the garden, and picked a perfectly ripe tomato, and several perfect leaves of lettuce. I made BLT wraps for DH and I for breakfast. What could be better?

(Okay, it would have been better if I could have gone out to the chicken coop to gather the eggs for DS's scrambled eggs, but I have yet to pluck up the courage to raise chickens. Maybe next year!)

I've had no luck with seeds either. I think because I put them in late and it was already pretty dry and hot out there and I haven't really watered anything much. Maybe they'll all surprise me by poppingup next year when I least expect them! Smiling
