The rush got to be too much, and I decided we were going about this all backwards.
We did go look at that house yesterday. It was cute, but the ceilings were very low and it felt a bit like a midget house inside. Also -- and this wasn't in the pictures! -- because it is in a "desireable" area, when you go out to the back half of the lot, you see a huge, ugly, suburban/exurban development on what was once a cornfield. It's your neighbor. Sooo . . . probably not.
Today we decided not to go look at more places and instead have our realtors some here and start looking seriously at what we can get for our house. We need to think realistically about how long it would take us to get ready to sell and how long it would take us to sell -- if our house is on the market in November we'd either have to pull it off or expect to sell it for much less because it sat too long. (The Nov.-Jan market is, as you might expect, pretty dead in Minnesota.)
We are still considering this place, but we see that they misquoted the amount of land, so we would have to negotiate with the neighbors, who are said to be willing to part with land (currently used for corn) for "next to nothing."
So, we'll see. We could put this plan on hold until spring, or we might decide to forge ahead. Who knows what the future may hold?
