Off the Deep End

Timeline:

Sunday: DH has epiphany that we must move to the country
Monday: DH and I e-mail lots, house plans, and hobby farms for sale back and forth all afternoon
Tuesday: We drive out to Western Wisc. to see a cute farmhouse with 20 acres (terrain not suited to horses though -- too much hill and woods) and a fabulous guest house. Tempting, but not quite right.
Wednesday morning: DH says, "It's 9 am! Start making more appointments to see farms!" I schedule one for Saturday, still trying to make contact with another.
Wednesday afternoon: DH calls and says "Guess where I am!" Somehow it is not hard to guess that he has left work, unable to wait until Saturday to see another farm house

The man has the fever. My middle ground is that we buy land ASAP and then proceed at a moderate pace, but I can tell you that when DH gets an idea, he is like a steamroller stuck in 5th gear.

Not sure where we go from here. He is headed home now with a cell phone full of photos to show me. Help!

Oh. My. GOSH! He has been bitten by something!

Hey, there is a place 1 1/2 miles from me. 30 acres, 5 bedroom house that needs a little work, and lots of pens for horses. The previous owners daughter was Miss Teen Rodeo New Mexico a couple of years ago, so it's suitable for horses. Believe they just want $105,000 for it.

I also know of a farm of 1,750 acres for sale. Or how about just a 120 acre circle w/ house, bet they would sell it for a song!

What would he say if you told him "How 'bout New Mexico!?". LOL!!!

How 'bout upstate New York?

Has your Darling Husband morphed into Farmer Hoggett, with an idea that tickles and nags and won't let go?

You might have to hide the checkbook for a while.

Or maybe you could become my neighbour???

Like them both, a lot. Wow, property is cheap out there compared to here. Either of those would be pushing $800k in Oregon.

Very nice Shaun! Good luck! Those would run closer to 150 to 200K around here.

must I always be the voice of common sense around here, the one who ends up sounding more like the voice of Doom... I reckon Jenny knows about things that bite, so take DH to the doctor Shaun and get him pumped full of something to slow him down. You don't want to rush into it and find something perfect the week after you've paid for somewhere. If it's right it will still be right for you in a few weeks or months or even a year.

SLOW DOWN!!! It's not that I'm not excited for you, but this speed is worrying Shaun. It took me a couple of years to get us moved back to the UK, and that was just the definite part, not the dreaming. That may be too long, but give it a couple of months at least. Enjoy the dreaming and the planning for 5mins before you rush into the doing.

Kerri.

Consider it education

No way to know what 5 acres, 10 acres, 20 acres, 40 acres really feels like. And it's a totally different market out of the city -- $325K in town would never get you a house over 2000 sq ft. Probably not over 1750!

And it's hard to know what a 40-minute drive is like -- and what it's like when it's mostly interstate, or mostly country road, or whatever.

I'm still in favor of the buy-land plan. Get some good land now. Go out and play on the weekends. Take some time to save money so we can afford to build and live at the same time, and build something that really suits our needs.

But there is something appealing about having all the outbuildings there, the septic there, the electric, gas, and telephone there, without the hassle of arranging it ourselves . . .

To be continued!

Oh, and thanks for the many offers. It's tempting, but we are Midwesterners, and as far as I can see we will stay that way!
