DD's visit to the eye doctor today gave us good news, feels like the first good news I've gotten in weeks! DD's eyesight is improving!
She has a mild case of amblyopia [1]. She has mild astigmatism and farsightedness moreso in one eye that the other, causing the weaker eye to start "giving up" which we don't want. The doctor's assistant called it "an eye that hasn't learned how to see". Her right eye is her strong eye, the left one the weak one. For a year now she's been wearing eyeglasses to correct her vision, and it's working.
Today, without her glasses on, she was able to read one row further down than she did last year on the picture charts. Her prescription has changed enough that we've ordered a new pair of glasses (the frames are a lovely blue) that will look even more darling on her than the current (purple) ones do.
I felt so miserable last year when I found out she needed glasses, this is such good news that her vision is improving...I can't even tell you.
Ever since her diagnosis with JRA I've been worried. It affects not only her joints but her eyes, too. This is one thing I can now start worrying less about. I'm honestly almost happy for the first time in a long time.
I feel like all my vigilance with making sure she has her glasses on is now justified. I felt like Dragon Mommy ordering her to put them on every morning then everytime she took them off because she was playing. And I don't feel as badly (or not beating my self up so much) about the times we left the house without noticing she didn't have them on at all.
So I have a bit of good news with which to go into the weekend. Thank goodness her vision is correctable and correcting.
