Tell me I'm not NUTS!!

I know, it sounds like I can't be serious, but I have to know...AM I the Nutty one?

Here's the background: My family (female members esp.) are going a little crazy with the plastic surgery..I mean, tummy tucks, lipo, boob jobs (can I say that?), back tightening, etc. Mainly sis-in-laws. My mom thinks it's awesome and wants to do it to, I'm thinking...YUCK! I had enough pain via a c-section, not going to go through full body pain to look like a barbie!! But yet, my family acts as though I'm the weird one. Asking, "But don't you want to look good for your hubby?" I say, "Yep, that's why we jog together in the morning." They say it's too much work to wait for jogging to get rid of baby flab. I'm torn, love em all, but feeling ostrasized since I just won't do it. Plus, they aren't shy about the fact that the body is paid for, as in, (Lifting shirt) "Look what I had done!" Freaks me out.

I realize I always come on here with weird/bad news, here's some good news: We're on the count down to move, things in boxes, three more weeks. Can't wait to see in person the home that DH picked out for me, says he can't wait to see the look on my face, he's been gloating about how proud he is of himself, and I'm stoked to see it. Yippee!!

You aren't nuts!!!

The current obsession with plastic surgery is what's insane - in my not-so-humble opinion.

Ditto Rose. I personally

Ditto Rose. I personally wouldn't think about plastic surgery at this time. Now, if I was in a horrific accident or something, then I may. But tummy tucks, boob jobs, nose jobs. Not into it. I have better things to spend my money on.

I canNOT understand for the life of me why someone would VOLUNTARILY have surgery.

You are not crazy!! Everyone has different views about that stuff. I think you have a very healthy attitude about it.

You have a lot to look forward to with your new hoursek, etc. Good luck and forget about the tummy tuck!

Only reason for cosmetic surgery is for reconstruction, IMO

Submitted by Anhata on Mon, 06/19/2006 - 11:08pm.

In order to alieviate pain, suffering, congenital deformities, reconstruction after accidents, these are reasons to have elective cosmetic surgery. To do it because you're too lazy to get fit...that's nuts. What on earth is back-tightening? No, don't tell me, I don't want to know. You're the one with the healthy attitude, kudos to you for jogging. Wish I could. Sort of.

TMI alert: I had breast reduction surgery because my gigantic bosom was physically hurting me. They took off six pounds, three pounds per side, and I'm STILL a size DD cup. It make breast feeding not so good, but I can't regret it for any other reason. That is the ONLY cosmetic surgery I will ever have done at this point, barring any freak accidents of a disfiguring nature. (Knocking on wood.)

No, you are not nuts, you're quite sane, Rose is right, it's the plasic surgery craze that's nuts. You can probably thank shows like the Swan or whatever it was for your families obession. Or the culture that spawned it. Shows like that are nauseating.

Oh no

No, the behavior you are describing sounds crazy! If someone wants cosmetic surgery, well, more power to 'em, but encouraging someone else to do it is way beyond the pale of polite behavior! And showing off the results . . . Barf!

but you've gotta live with them

Submitted by Kerri on Tue, 06/20/2006 - 7:57am.

so you are going to have to find a way to "live and let live". Fingers crossed nobody will find out the hard way that cosmetic surgery is still real surgery.

I can't even find the time or money to get a decent haircut so I'm obviously not going to be enthusiastic about wasting both on getting myself sliced and diced. But however nuts you think they are (and I'm with you) they're still your family and it's probably not worth alienating them over this. Quietly keep your opinions to yourself and stand your ground without being rude and they'll eventually get that you aren't interested enough to see the latest 'job'!

Kerri.

Family can be interesting, eh? Just glad to hear I'm not the only one thinking--sheesh! I do wanna clarify though...even though my fam is a bit nuts, I still don't think I'd trade them for the world. We do have some good times together. So, no, it's not worth making a fuss to their faces about, but I do need to keep standing my ground. Not that it will be hard, saying "No, I won't be cut on purpose." seems easy now that I've had a c-section. Before, I almost gave in, now I'm thinking NEVER!! Unless of course, scary accident or something, knock-knock.

Love you all!!

Its an ongoing process

I hope they know that eventually what man has made will fall again and again. Usually once you have surgery to lift something it falls later on and you gotta lift it again....no thanks!
Oh and what is back tightening? Mine is already so darn stiff I can't imagine!

Back Tightening

Submitted by Jilsyt on Sat, 06/24/2006 - 6:35pm.

Back tightening is when you have your love handles liposuctioned, and then the skin tightened up. You have to wear a compression vest for 8 weeks afterward to keep bloodflow working right and healing, etc. It's yuck. Personally, I think I'd rather exercise for 8 weeks to tighten up than be cut then have to wear a heavy vest!! To each his own, I guess (my new motto, therefore I will not go insane--well, I think it lowers my chances).

I often think plastic

Submitted by plainandsimple227 on Fri, 06/30/2006 - 8:59am.

I often think plastic surgery is the modern woman's girdle. Personally, I love the infinite variety of the human body!! Your best excuse about not getting it is saying that you're quite scared of going under the knife, and that you wouldn't like to talk about it any more as it makes you feel icky!!! you wouldn't be lying if you said that and it's not really criticising their life choices, so you wouldn't be insulting them!

do it yourself boob job and face lift

Submitted by lildebbi on Fri, 06/30/2006 - 3:32pm.

I have a book by Mildred Carter that has the process for giving yourself a boob job and a face lift through the massage of various reflexology points on your body. I've tried both and know that they work - mainly because one day I was interrupted after only doing one side of my chest. Next time I looked that side was bigger - noticeably!
The face lift process works as well and is sure less painful, less invasive and less costly than surgery - plus you can do it in front of your own mirror and never have to see bruising or scars. I took ten years off my face with this easy process that you can do in the time it takes you to watch a one hour program on tv.
The breast enlargement exercises do hurt a bit - if you get overzealous, like I did, your ribs, etc. can be a bit tender. Basically, all you're doing by massaging the breasts and surrounding tissue is stimulating and clearing your lymph glands - which is a good thing to do anyway. It keeps lymph flowing.
