Reflux Update

If you were around this year last time you may remember that we dealt with finding that our youngest (now 3) had ureteral reflux, meaning that urine backs up from the bladder into the kidneys. Whoops, wrong way!

On a scale of 1 to 5, she had a 3 on one side and a 4 on the other, which our Dr. told us suggested about a 70% chance that she would need surgery, but we would treat her with a daily dose of low-dose antibiotic and watch and wait to see if she would grow out of it in a few years.

Well, it would appear she has! The Dr. was quite amazed. It's not just that she's improved. The reflux seems to be entirely gone. He said it was extremely unusual to go from a higher grade to nothing in just one year (unusual enough that we have to go back in a month to confirm the findings, even after doing 2 tests today) but, in his words, "miracles do happen."

We are quite excited about taking her off her antibiotics, and also amazed and awed by the wonderful progress she has made. File it under "Prayers Answered."

I'm glad the doctor is having her checked again though, and might ask to see her in a year or two, but even so that's one more triumph for antibiotics, whatever people have started saying about them. I know a number of people even in my small circle who owe their lives to antibiotics; me and my mother are just two. Fingers crossed the next checkup confirms that the problem has sorted.

That's fabulous news! Hopefully this will be the end of it and you can release the worries of a little darling having surgery! Three is so young for something like that! DD was two when she had an MRI done and that was traumatic enough.

Antibiotics save lives, yes. Long term use can throw off the flora in the tummy though. Lots of beneficial bacteria live there and keep things "moving". Antibiotics don't know the diff between good and bad bugs, so they all get zapped. A lady at my church had a terrible two weeks when after a round of antibiotics a "bad" bug that was antibotic resistance took over once all the other tummy flora and fauna were killed off. It was very painful.

Luckily there are "pro-biotic" foods and supplements that you can take to restore order if you're concerned about that. Shaklee has a probiotic pill that you take with a little powder dissolved in juice (it's a tiny tiny pill) that puts the lactobacillus (beneficial bugs) back in your tummy. Lest a Dr. tell you those don't work (one told me that your stomach acid kills most of the lactobacillus before it gets to your intestines) the Shaklee pills are triple coated to release only once it's arrived at the right spot.

Unpasturized, uncooked saurkraut, yogurt with live active cultures in it (make sure it says that on the carton), kefir (some stores carry very yummy cartons of this in several fruit flavors--it tastes like sparkly smoothies), and any homemade fermented foods will do the trick. The cookbook Lynn promotes, Nourishing Traditions, has lots of recipies for how to ferment your own stuff. The fruit chutneys and preserves are very very tasty, they should be quite palatable for kids. There's way more than that in the book so if that's a little too much, the book Wild Fermentation is smaller, very fun to read, and is mostly just homemade ferments.

Thanks for letting us know the good news!

Hurray for the good news Shaun!
Welcome home Lynn! Checking in to the cheerful updates from your sweet JJ have truely been rare bright spots in my days here lately!

On Saturday the doctors told us they didn't expect MIL to survive the night ~ Monday DH and his sister and brother broken-heartedly made the decision to take her off the forced-air breathing machine (per her previously stated wishes)~ Tonight she's holding her own...and watching American Idol! She's not out-of-the-woods by any means...but the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff are delightedly flabbergasted and DH and I are exaustedly anticipating a full night's sleep in the same bed! (I've been sleeping (HA!) in a recliner at MIL's bedside since last Friday.)

Miracles abound and my life is overflowing with grace today!

Blessings,
Lenora

"The grace is sufficient to the need." JJ always says, "What the hell does that mean?" I say, that there's enough of whatever is needed to go around, including miracles. We don't always get our miracles, but that's usually because we don't really need our miracles; it's not given to us to know why. All I know, from what I experienced in my brief death, is that it's all going to be okay in the end.
