Our furniture is Shaker style, and wood. Do you have kids? If so, be prepared to replace the glass in the coffee table at least once if not twice during it's lifetime. My grandmother has a 40-year old glass topped coffee table and the glass only needed to be replaced after my kid brother got near it. So be warned.

Not only is it risky for a glass topped table around children, it's messy. If you have kids, it's going to get fingerprints all over it 24/7.

But, if you don't have children, go for it. Not a modern furniture person myself. More of a Country styled, hand me down, mix it up, but make sure it's useful person here. LOL! I have a really sturdy coffee table that I sit on quite a bit. haha!

I don't even HAVE a coffee table!

There's just too much chaos around here. We have a wicker chest in the TV room that was my childhood toy chest (many happy memories just in its smell) that we have a tray on top of. That serves fine, and no one can hurt themselves on it.

we've got side tables, mantelpiece, window ledges... and the tables are all wood too. My parents had a large glass-topped table when I was a kid, and I can second the comments on fingerprints, because between me and the dog my mother was cleaning that table all the time!! They finally got rid of the central coffee table and reclaimed their living room.

one thing I would say is beware going for something too fashionable or stylish, because it's more likely to not suit your taste in 5-10yrs. Choose simple lines, or go for cheap! Of course if you fall in love with a piece that's totally different! Smiling
