Chinese

Kerri's picture

we had rice with 'dishes' last night. One egg and tomato, one garlic greens, one pork with mushrooms and sugarsnap peas and one sweetcorn with pinenuts (that we've only ever seen in a small restaurant in Beijing which specialised in northern Chinese food). The kids were very enthusiastic, but DS loves the egg and tomato dish and DD mostly soaked up the sauces! Ok, that's not entirely fair, but it's part of the source of their interest!

tonight?? We've got quite a lot of veg around, including some asparagus I picked up yesterday (74p a bunch in Lidl Honey!) so that will probably inform my choice later.

Kerri.

revolting

Honey's picture

asparagus, eww.........

...not to mention what it does to you in the bathroom department.

DS14 has a maths class this evening and is out from 3pm - 10pm so I cooked dinner this afternoon instead of this evening. We had steak and eggs with hash browns.

I love asparagus!

Becky's picture

We'll probably have some chicken and rice, or maybe chicken and potatoes. I don't know, something with chicken!

Asparagus??

Kerri's picture

of all the things that could give me trouble asparagus is not one of them I assure you!

we had ours with bacon and mash.

I like to marinade boneless chicken legs in soy sauce and cornflour for a while then fry it - it's to die for! Haven't done that in a while - mmm....!

Kerri.

not THAT sort of bathroom trouble

Honey's picture

Boneless chicken legs?

Honey's picture

How do they stand up? Big grin

not noticed that kind of trouble either

Kerri's picture

and cooked chicken legs don't stand up at all smart arse! Laughing out loud

I think we're having sausages tonight, probably with boiled potatoes since we ran out of chips, and maybe gravy too. Which just leaves a veg... Don't have any cabbage or broccoli which would be my first choice, and I don't think spinach really goes somehow.

Kerri.

Haricot bean curry

Honey's picture

A bit of an experiment. Should be chickpea curry which we have had before, but they didn't have any chickpeas in the supermarket, so I went for haricot beans! We're having it with basmati rice and garlic and coriander nan.

cowboy beans

Kerri's picture

that's what my mother always called them anyway. It was a toss-up whether to use one or two cans of baked beans so I kept it at one and added raisins, curry powder, worcester sauce, brown sugar and some other weird items, and a splash of water and it was just right. DD has given up fussing despite her not liking raisins. She knows I'll cook for the majority, and that means the adults mostly, and she'll either have to learn to love it or else lump it in gracious silence!! Smiling

Kerri.

sort of pie

Honey's picture

Corned beef, sweetcorn and onion mashed up together, with sliced potatoes on top.

spag bol

Kerri's picture

my menu planning has just died a death the last few weeks. I'd still like to try and get back at it though, because it's hard to think of dinner when the only free time you have is when you're sat on the toilet! Sticking out tongue

Kerri.

Sunday

Kerri's picture

can't remember Saturday an Friday was take-out curry so I'm skipping straight to Sunday. We went to my parents' house for lunch - Mum's homemade leek and potato soup - so no roast for us. We had pan-fried lamb leg steaks, boiled new potatoes in butter and salad. The kids were really happy with it and so were we! Smiling

Tonight is going to be a jar of stuff made by the restaurant chain, Nando's... lime and coriander I think with chicken most likely, and rice perhaps. There could be some spinach in there if I can salvage some - it has been neglected a while!

Kerri.

I can't remember

Honey's picture

I haven't posted here since Thurday and I can't remember what we've eaten! I know one evening we had potato curry, with lentils and rice, and yesterday my brother took us out to a restaurant for dinner but other than that my mind's a blank. The cupboards are pretty empty, so goodness knows what we'll be having today. Maybe tuna and pasta.

been eating out a lot

Becky's picture

As per Mom. But that will change tonight! Tonight we're having beans and rice with sausage, made by ME.

more lentils

Honey's picture

Tonight we had fakess, which is basically lentils, tomatoes and potatoes with garlic and onion.

legumes

Kerri's picture

that seems to be all you folk are eating at the moment!!

we're having tonight what I mentioned for last night because last night we ended up having pasta with meatballs in tomato sauce with mushrooms. DH was sent to take out turkey pieces and took out meatballs because he felt like it. Today *I* took out the meat, though it was pork because DH has hidden the turkey somewhere. I've also set the rice going already which is a start!

I've asked DH to help me with the meal planning and other routines since he'll be home and only as busy as me with business for quite a while. He's good at housework but helping me work out routines is going to be something new. Shocked Am I mad!?!?!?

Kerri.

lentils, lentils and more lentils

Honey's picture

I had fakess again this evening (leftovers from yesterday). DS is at his maths class all evening, so I made dinner at lunchtime too - cajun chicken with nasi goreng (Asian spicy rish dish). I think the fakess is Greek, so i'm certainly mixing up my cultures today! Smiling

Crockpot Pork

lgunnoe's picture

probably w/bbq sauce and on buns
Gunnoe slaw Eye-wink
veges
fries (maybe!)

let's see...

Kerri's picture

baked potatoes, bacon and garlic mushrooms. Not terribly healthy (lots of butter and salt!) but it was delish! Smiling

Kerri.

umm

Honey's picture

DS wasn't here for dinner so I forgot all about eating until about 9pm and then just had some toast and fruit Smiling

Thursday

witchiepoo's picture

Grilled pork chops with BBQ sauce
pasta salad
zucchini parmesan

noodles again...

Kerri's picture

this time I picked up some hoisin sauce though so at least it will taste a little different. I've already forestalled DS' grizzling by buying our first strawberries from the UK - probably Jersey this early in the year.

Kerri.

mm noodles

Honey's picture

I was planning on eggs and hash browns, but now I am going to turn the cupboard out looking for a packet of instant ramen noodles. I exist on this thread to make the rest of you feel superior Smiling

ps, DS is away still, which is why I am eating crap Big grin

chicken

Becky's picture

Chicken with barbecue sauce, that is, and macaroni and cheese. I guess carrot sticks for a veggie.

We ordered pizza last night.

Noodles must be a theme!

lgunnoe's picture

I'm doing chicken "gunnofredo" Eye-wink
a la "Shaunbalaya"...in that we don't love a heavy sauce so I've tweaked the basic idea.

I've got broccoli florets and carrot shreds to throw in, too.

with garlic bread and salad

Blessings,
Lenora

OK - frozen chicken

Andrea's picture

OK - frozen chicken enchilada casserole ala Pace, green salad, and canned tamales. OH and watermelon.

lotsof salad here

Kerri's picture

on Friday night we had boiled new potatoes with butter, a mixed leaf salad and some oven-baked chicken drumsticks.

Saturday was a long tiring day and my parents only left just after 4:30pm so we had salad again, this time with some baked potatoes and bacon.

I love summer cooking - it's so much easier! Smiling

Kerri.

Saturday and Sunday

Honey's picture

Last night we had sausages with lentils, rice and mango chutney.

Tonight will be something mince based as that's all I have. Pakistani kima, spaghetti bolognese or something similar.

If I don't go grocery shopping soon we'll be eating stone soup Big grin

I haven't the slightest idea

Becky's picture

Maybe sweet and sour chicken.

Very springy

Shaun's picture

We had asparagus risotto (sorry Honey) for dinner and strawberries for dessert -- two very springy foods. My kids absolutely love risotto and will eat just about any veg you work in there.

"Gunnofredo" -- love it!

simple stuff

Kerri's picture

I was dying of a headache most of yesterday but since DH would have happily worked through dinner I had to come up with something, so... I threw franks into a pan, threw all remaining salad and some pretty tomatoes on the vine at 3 plates, added a slice of bread with ketchup and/or mustard for them, drained the franks... then crawled back to bed, telling them dinner was ready!

tonight's dinner won't be much more complicate since DH and I are out all day then have to grocery shop with the kids later - ARGH! Might grab a cooked chicken from the supermarket, more salad and do it that way. Maybe add some new potatoes. The kids might start to rebel soon though... they've had salad with dinner for the last 3 meals and with lunch on Friday too. They've largely stopped fussing about salad but that could be pushing it!!

Kerri.

mince and yorkshire pudding invention

Honey's picture

Last night I discovered four yorkshire puddings in the freezer. I cooked mince and a tin of tomatoes with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and curry powder, throwing in some peas at the end. We ate the yorkshire puddings stuffed with the mince mixture, along with a tin of carrots and a few bits of broccoli that were also lurking in the freezer.

Tonight we can have almost anything we want as my groceries just arrived Big grin I think we'll probably have salad, maybe chicken salad.

Actually Meal Planned

witchiepoo's picture

This Week! Yeah for me! Laughing out loud

Tonight: Steak, mushrooms, broccoli, mashed taters, lemon pound cake with sliced fresh strawberries

Tuesday: sesame/soy/maple marinated chicken breasts, ginger and lemongrass jasmine rice, steamed snow peas

Wednesday: Grilled turkey tenderloin, barley, salad

Thursday: Roast Pork, rosemary-garlic roasted potatoes, green beans

Friday: Appitizer Extravaganza! Dim sum, potato skins, spinach dip, and hot wings for the guys

Gotta love the appetizer

Andrea's picture

Gotta love the appetizer nite Jo! OK, I've figured out the difference b/t your menus and mine. I have chicken breast - you have sesame/soy/maple chicken breast! I have rice - you have jasmine rice with lemongrass and green onions! No wonder yours sound so much better!

Tonite:

marinated salmon on the grill (storebought marinade)
tri-color couscous
steamed broccoli

lots of creativity here

Kerri's picture

not from me I should add!!

we had a slightly unsuccessful fish and pasta dish last night. It was unsuccessful because the sauce was sore-bought and just didn't do what we had hoped ('creamy lemon and parsley' for fish).

Tonight's a no-brainer though. We bought some lovely sirloin steaks, we've got big fat portabella mushrooms and we'll probably have it with chips or boiled new potatoes, depending on how the cooks feel. DH gets quite involved in the cooking and grocery shopping these days since he's at home, so that saves my weary brain some! It's nicer to share those activities.

Kerri.

yet more salads!

Kerri's picture

this tme we went for the total salad option - greens, tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, pasta salad and leftover franks for the kids and chorizo for me. DH just had more pasta salad! I came up with a slight but utterly brilliant twist to my regular pasta salad today (the original is in the recipe box somewhere I think - very simple). We toasted a bag of pine nuts and they went great with the tuna and sweetcorn. I've been looking for a new way of doing it but never quite found a new veg to add that I'm really comfortable with (other than spring onions maybe!).

Kerri.

Fishfingers!

Honey's picture

with new potatoes, and a kind of stirfried medley of veg (sweetcorn, red onion, three colours of peppers). Followed by grapes.
