DD's Lump

Late Friday afternoon, I noticed a lump on DD5's throat. It looked just like she had an adam's apple. I took her to the pediatrician this morning, and it looks like we are in for a week of tests.
She has an ultrasound this afternoon at the hospital and then a round of blood tests because they want to get a white cell count.
Next Tuesday she sees the ear, nose, throat specialist.
I'm scared spitless.

My thoughts are with you
Lots of positive energy sent your way.

Hopefully it's easily fixable
Like a thyroid imbalance or something else that can be treated with a little pill.
You're little one is in my thoughts and prayers.

Wonderful News
Yesterday was DD's appointment with the radiologist(the first appointment had to be re-scheduled because the technician was sick). Our wonderful pediatrician had asked for a "fluid consult," which means they gave her the results immediately, and she called me before we had even left the radiology office to say it is just a cyst.
Phew!
They think it is a cyst type that happens because of thyroid development and movement at DD's age. We still have to meet with the throat doctor to make a treatment plan because if it doesn't go away on its own after time they will have to remove it.
Thank you everyone, for all your positive energy and support. That was one of the worst weeks of my life, and knowing you were all pulling for us made it much easier to handle.
Love,
-Jo
I'm so glad that all is
I'm so glad that all is well. Things like that are so very scary to go through.
Lauralyn
yay!!!
Glad it will be ok!
what a relief!
I'm glad to hear that it is just a cyst.
treatable is good!
there could still be a bit of an ordeal for DD of course, and since she doesn't realise that a cyst is a comparatively good thing you could still have some trouble ahead with her. But we're very relieved, and I can only imagined how you must feel... now it's okay to breathe again!
Kerri.
Oh I'm so glad!!
Now I can uncross everything.

Treatment Plan
We went to the throat specialist yesterday and here is the news:
DD has a thyreal glossal duct cyst.
It will not go away on its own, and will probably grow and get infected if not removed. So,
DD will have surgery on July 13th to remove it. It tried really hard to get them to do it with local anesthesia, but it is growing around her hyoid bone. This section of the bone will also have to be removed to prevent recurrence. DD will have to have general anesthesia and a 24 hour observation period in the hospital after the surgery.
given our family history of post-surgical infection (DH almost died 5 years ago), I am a bit freaked out by the prospect of surgery. I am, however, very grateful that it is something minor, and not the many, much worse things that were possible just a week ago.
Thanks again for all the good thoughts!
-Jo
Glad the procedure is
Glad the procedure is scheduled and that it wasn't something very serious. Best Wishes.
Hang in there Jo
soon it will just be a distant memory for you all and maybe an interesting scar for DD. Find out as much as you can, inform the medical staff of everything you think might possibly be relevant about family medical history (inc. the infection thing) and then remember to breathe. You probably wish the surgery was sooner, but it's not too bad I would think - might seem like an eternity to you though.
we're all here with you, so save your strength for your family and come here to break down and be weak whenever you feel the urge. Nobody can be that strong all the time!
Kerri.
Good wishes
Oh Jo, I really sympathize with you -- I live in fear of DD2 needing surgery for her ureteral reflux, even though it "simple" as far as surgery goes. And I don't have bad experiences to fan the flame.
Keep us in the loop so we can hold you all up in prayer/keep the good vibrations headed in your direction. You and DD will get through this!

I know you know all this
But, to remind you, most post-surgical infections in patients with normal immune systems are preventable if you ask every single last doctor, nurse, CNA, and any other staff member "Did you wash your hands?" whenever they come in the room. The hospital where my cousin is staying has big signs up all over the place saying "IT'S OKAY TO ASK IF I'VE WASHED MY HANDS."
