We have an ancient washer and dryer. John has made it his mission in life to keep them running for as long as possible; he actually likes puttering around on them. Plus also, we're broke.
The washer is so old that he has had to start manufacturing some of the parts. Its tub is held into place, for instance, by a piece of steel coathanger he pounded and annealed into service.
The dryer gave out late last week, at the beginning of a truly monumental pile of laundry. John poked and prodded, analyzed, researched, questioned. Was it the heat coil? No. Was it the motor? No, motors on Maytags, even ancient ones, never give out apparently. Long story short, it turned out to be a little clip that had bent out of shape.
Cost of clip: $1.
Cost of thermostat it shorted out: $30.
Having a husband who can apparently fix anything: Priceless.
