Imagine....

Let me set the scene.....

It is chilly outside, I am still in my favorite pj's. The house is dim even though it is 1:30 pm. I am in the computer room with my feet on the desk and the keyboard in my lap. I have my earphones on and am listening to Pink Martini,Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler to be exact, while I read blogs that I have been meaning to read.

I hear two sweet little boys in the next room start to bicker over their game. They are going at it....

What is a mother to do?

Get up and settle it?

Take the game away?

Tell them to get along?

This was my choice......

turn up the volume on the earphones just abit more and give DH a wonderfully relaxed smile as he flys by the door to settle the fight!

Ah....earphones.....Pink Martini.......where have you been all my life!!!!!!!

Hope you get a bit of relaxation out of your day...

Keep getting better.......

Submitted by Jana on Sat, 02/18/2006 - 1:39pm.

2 girlfriends have invited me out to dinner and a movie, Brokeback Mountain.

DSs are building a masterpiece with legos and knexs.

DH is draped in the recliner watching the Olympics.

I am listening to Dave Mathews, Let You Down, truly that man could convince me of anything with his voice! Eye-wink

I have made chocolate chip cookies. You want to know how I like them? Warm from the oven with melted butter on top! Yum! It is cold outside and I have no guilt today!

DSs have made thmeselves mini margaritas, their version with lime sherbet and 7up. Funny thing is neither DH nor I drink margaritas but they see them everytime we eat out for Mexican food so they created what they think it is! Smiling

We have also had 2 batches of oatmeal.

And I am still in my pj's.

Ah....some musical favs today:

Pink Martini - Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler
Dave Mathews Band - Let You Down
Pink Martini - Andalucia
Ella Fitzgerald - Fever
Bruno Coulais - Les Choristes
Narnia Soundtrack
a bass mix of the Pink Panther (to which the dog HOWLED to!)
Yo Yo Ma - Prelude from Suite No. 1 in G Major for Cello
Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon
Jon Butcher - If Wishes Were Horses

Which suite is Yo-Yo Ma playing? Bach or something else?

I should get more cello music

Submitted by Kerri on Sun, 02/19/2006 - 2:28am.

the one I bought a while back by my favourite (because I did a masterclass with him - I'm biassed) is actually pretty awful. I didn't get to listen to it first, but the chance of finding it in Singapore made me grab it. Any suggestions Becky?? And what about that piece you're listening to Jana - what's that like?? I've never seen Lloyd Webber play live, so perhaps this isn't a fair comment, but he mostly doesn't seem like a very friendly individual. That said, his Travels With My Cello (I have it on cassette - might be time to update) is a really nice mix and his comments on the album are quite fun. Maybe he just needs plastic surgery!! Evil

Jana, it really sounds like you've hit your sweet spot... long may it last! Smiling

Cello Music

Submitted by Zillah on Sun, 02/19/2006 - 12:01pm.

A couple of favourites (I'n not a big Lloyd Webber fan, myself)

Bach Cello Suites played by Paul Tortelier on EMI Classics

Beethoven Cello and Piano Sonatas 3 and 5 played by Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax on CBS Masterworks

Lyn Harrell, can't remember the exact recording, but it's Brahms cello concerto and the double concerto.

That's what I have to hand at the moment.

Oh, and of course can't be without Jaqueline Du Pre playing the Elgar concerto.

not many ideas besides that

I like the Dutilleux cello concerto, though.

Thanks for the tip Becky, I'd never encountered Dutilleux, and having googled him I think this is pretty slack on my part. I love 20th century music, so he's going straight onto my birthday list!

It is off The Essential Yo-Yo Ma. I don't have the disc but you can go and listen to is at Amazon.

Check out Pink Martini while you are there! I do have Sypathique and highly recommend it!

Travailler

...means "to work." That song's lyric, loosely translated, is:

I don't want to work
I don't want to eat lunch
I only want to remember
and so, I smoke.

from the home of Pink Martini (one of my friends went to school with Thomas L.),

I was wondering if you "knew" them since they were from Portland.

The CD has the lyrics in English, luckily. I love that song! And I love Pink Martini!

I hadn't seen your list before somehow... looks good. I remember watching some televised masterclasses with Paul Tortelier many years ago... I shall have to make a note of all those suggestions and then drag myself into somewhere to get them ALL! Eye-wink

thanks Becky too... is Dutilleux the name of the composer, the concerto itself or the cellist?? I've never come across that name at all. I really have only a handful of old favourites in my classics section because DH isn't a great fan, though he does enjoy the ones I have, so I'm sure he could stand a bit more. Smiling

I'm a bit less adventurous...

as far as 20th century music is concerned, but then I once sat through an awful performance of Kurt Weil's Mahagony (no, it wasn't pronounced like the wood, so I'm not sure if it was spelled that way or not) with my grandmother. My uncle got us free tickets because he was performing in this debut - dreadful stuff. And he's found some new rotten composer too... so I'm a bit squeamish on more modern stuff. Can you describe it Becky?? I mean, I like melodious modern - Stravinsky, Copeland, maybe some Shostakovich... Gershwin!! Eye-wink But Kurt Weil was like hours of torture - nails across a blackboard continuously. And my grandmother for company to make things worse! Barf!

my mistake... found out more about Kurt Weil in the last 5mins than ever before. And I never really wanted to know. The other horrid composer was Judith Weir and my uncle was in Blonde Eckbert. I never had to sit through that though... just hear bits on the radio.

Judith Weir is quite mild. DH has met her.... I think you'd be fine with Dutilleux though. Can you handle Kodaly? If you can handle Kodaly, Dutilleux should be fine.
