A New Me

Submitted by mummadee on Tue, 01/31/2006 - 12:41am.

After 13 years of marriage I am sad to say I lost my waist. This year I would like to get the old body back in shape and get on an exercise program. The kids are getting older and I'm hoping to figure some time for "me" and to stick to it.

I am interested to know your ways of keeping in shape. I've no interest in joining a gym, anything like that, because I live in the sticks and I don't want the drive. Also, I am just really super cheap. I've a child ready to start college and I'd like to watch the pennies here. Walking is out of the question right now because its cold outside. I hate the cold!

So.......I want to start off relatively easy. Comfortable. Just to get used to this. Say 15-30 minutes a day and go from there.

A little bit about me-- I like soapmaking, I am learning to sew. And, I love to read. Currently I am reading The Rise and Fall of the House of Windsor.

Ciao!

Hi Mummadee!

I'd think if you lost your waist but have kept your santiy you're still ahead of the game!!! Eye-wink

I'm with you though...on needing to do SOMETHING to stop this time-and-pizza-induced downhill slide of my physical self...AND with not wanting to invest any (much) $$$ in doing so.

We have a "New You" thread where we share and support our "get healthy" activities...I think it's time to resurrect it! In the meantime...several of us who post on the "Taking Charge" thread have health/fittness as one of the areas requiring attention so "come on over!"

It may sound silly...

But it's rather fun! Have you ever gone to a place like Dave and Buster's and seen the dancing games? I've got a home version. We bought a used Playstation II off of some friends and my in-laws gave me Dance Dance Revolution for Christmas (actually DDRMax2). The pad that came with it lasted for about 6 months of heavy use and after that I bought a better one for about $100 that's already lasted over a year with no problems. I don't have to go out in the cold, the game has a lot of difficulty levels, and it doesn't feel so much like exercise. I bet older kids would enjoy it, too (though I don't have any myself). It doesn't work the arms at all so you might want to do something else for upper body strength, but it's definitely a good aerobic workout.

Here's some more information on it, and here's a website for people who are a lot more serious about the game than I am. Eye-wink

I'm with you! No outdoor exercise and no gym (I'm in the sticks, too).

Actually, I'm trying to get into some sort of routine for my far gone waistline. I had my fourth baby two months ago. I'm easing into things with a video that Cindy Crawford made after she had her baby. I'm also doing Weight Watchers without the meetings (my DH is on it and he goes to meetings, but he is more overweight than I am. I'm just trying to lose the last 25 of the 50 I gained this pregnancy).

Thanks for your welcome and inspiration. I will head on over to that thread and definately check out the links and ideas.

I truly can't wait until it warms up and I wake up. I feel like I'm in Zombieland this winter with all these dreary yucky days.

Cheers!

Picking up exersise stuff on the cheap

If you can bear them, you can usually find used tread mills and other fitness equipment on the cheap in the classifieds for indoor exercise. DH wants to find a bow-flex type system this way and has started looking.

Half.com has videos (Pilates Conditioning for Weight Loss, for example) starting at around $2.70. It's another $2.75 or so for media mail shipping, but you're still at half price there, easy.

I would do some internet searches for toning and slimming programs you can do in your own home? I have no regimen to share, I despise exercise in any form that is not doing something else, like gardening. Unfortunately.
