I soooo need to live in Scotland

Found this during one of my wild-hair googling sessions and it was so delicious, I have to share:

23rd. Psalm in Scots

The Lord is my Shepherd in nocht am I wantin'
In the haugh's green girse does He mak me lie doon
While mony puir straiglers are bleatin' and pantin'
By saft-flowin' burnies He leads me at noon.

When aince I had strayed far awa in the bracken,
And daidled till gloamin' cam ower a' the hills,
Nae dribble o' water my sair drooth to slacken,
And dark grow'd the nicht wi' its haars and its chills.

Awa frae the fauld, strayin' fit-sair and weary,
I thocht I had naethin' tae dae but tae dee.
He socht me and fand me in mountain hechts dreary,
He gangs by fell paths which He kens best for me.

And noo, for His name's sake, I'm dune wi' a' fearin'
Though cloods may aft gaither and soughin' win's blaw.
"Hoo this?" or "Hoo that?" -- oh, prevent me frae spearin'
His will is aye best, and I daurna say "Na".

The valley o' death winna fleg me to thread it,
Through awfu' the darkness, I weel can foresee.
Wi' His rod and His staff He wull help me to tread it,
Then wull its shadows, sae gruesome, a' flee.

Forfochen in presence o' foes that surround me,
My Shepherd a table wi' denties has spread.
The Thyme and the Myrtle blaw fragrant aroond me,
He brims a fu' cup and poors oil on my head.

Surely guidness an' mercy, despite a' my roamin'
Wull gang wi' me doon tae the brink o' the river.
Ayont it nae mair o' the eerie an' gloamin'
I wull bide in the Hame o' my Faither for ever.

lyrics from Traditonal Scottish Songs

My love of Scotland is a bit obsessive, really. I replay Keltik Elektrik's "Wild Mountain Thyme" over and over and over. When I listen to it, I can see myself so clearly, living in a small croft on a mountainside in Scotland. I can feel the wind whipping through my hair and tangling my skirts. There's a bonnie lad, too. Looks a lot like Jim Malcom.

If, at my memorial service, "Amazing Grace" is not played on the bagpipes, my hand to God, I will haunt my family for the rest of their days.

Scotland and western Oregon aren't too different, topographically and climate-wise.

And that, m'dearie, is why I love it here so...

Submitted by Anhata on Tue, 01/24/2006 - 2:40pm.

Reminds me of Scotland. The daylight hours are almost the same too...doesn't get dark until ridiculously late in summer, gets dark ridiculously early in winter. The rain patterns in winter are nearly identical, as you say. Can't attest to the summer, haven't spent summer in Scotland. Our only visit there was during the winter.

I'm seriously considering getting my hands on some heather seeds and strewing them about. All I can find are seeds for white heather so far, and I'd like purple, too. [edit: correction, the seeds I've found are for bothe white and lavender, but I have to buy a whole case of 25 packets for 55 pounds sterling (NOT!). I will reimburse any UK TNHer who sends me heather seeds. Big grin Hey, that's an idea, has TNH ever tried a seed swap/exchange program?]

Heather

I can't say I have particularly noticed heather seeds for sale, but next time I am in town I will look for them. I'll happily send them to you if I can find some Smiling

Is that advisable?

Submitted by Becky on Tue, 01/24/2006 - 5:20pm.

It's not always legal or ecologically wise to transfer seeds between ecosystems, even similar ones. If you haven't found the "right" kind of heather locally, there may be a reason. Unless you know for sure it's okay, remember to call your ag extension office to check. This is a sensitive issue in California so I've been made ultra-aware of it!

Good point

I know they sell African Heather round these parts, whatever that is. I'll look into it.

[Update: Heaths and heathers are sold and planted all around the west coast: WA, OR, and CA, including Calluna Vulgaris or Scottish Heather. So it's not an invasive or undesirable species. Found a purveyor of plants at www.heathsandheathers.com., but they're a bit pricy.]

I am new to this site, and found it by looking for Heather from Scotland. They have heather here but it is not the same as if it came from Scotland. (So my Grandmother Campbell says). I would love to do an exchange for some Sage or something from Southern Utah.

Bagpipes...

Submitted by julhome on Tue, 01/24/2006 - 2:14pm.

One of my borrowed children is learning. Actually, he's still on the chanter, waiting to move up to the pipes themselves. A couple weeks ago, my aunt and I went to a Boar's Head Festival. (Is that what it's called?). Anyway, all of the music was fabulous.

Scottish Music

I have a CD that my husband looked long and hard for by a now-defunct group called Ceili's Muse. On it are a couple of songs with lyrics by Robert Burns, and they're wonderful. I don't think these recordings are in general circulation, but if you can find them "Ca' The Yowes to the Knowes" and "The Lea Rig" are quite lovely. (Also "What You Do With What You've Got," but that's by someone named Si Khan, not Burns.) Smiling

Burns' poems set to music are crazy good

I admire Dougie MacLean, and he does these. His album Tribute, which I do not have, but crave, is mostly Burns' poems. I'll have to keep an eye out for the ones you mentioned.

Great Scots Poems

No Burns Night would be complete for me without a rendering of McGonagall, great reportage poet, tragedean and inadvertant comic of Dundee. If you've never encountered his tragically hilarious poems, check them out at http://www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk/poems/pgbridge.htm

OK, now I'm going to go and sort out how to do proper links!

The name strikes a chord in my memory, but I can't nail it down. I think I may have read something of his in school, but I can't think which poem it would be, I don't think it was Biddie Brown. Now I have to look through all his poems and see if I recognize one. Thanks alot. Sticking out tongue

Oh good grief!

I remember that poem Zillah... and I seem to recall hearing it in broad Scots at one point too. Some poems do stick with you forever don't they, no matter how hard you try to shake them off! Eye-wink

some books are actually translated into Scots - it's not a dialect but actually considered a language. And Mary Stuart stunned her subjects by being able to address them in pure Scots when she got off the boat from France.

my one and only trip to relatives in Edinburgh was so cold I haven't been back again in 6yrs!! I did like Edinburgh but the cold...!!! Jawdropping!

For me it's enough to have a Scottish doctor!!

I fell madly in love with Edinburgh

Submitted by Anhata on Wed, 01/25/2006 - 10:02pm.

Deepy, madly, truly. Went all over the city and to The Castle twice. Loved. Every. Second. (Have the Edinburgh Edition of Monopoly, too, not that that's apropopos of anything.) We were there a few weeks before Christmas and it wasn't any colder than where we lived in the States. The thing that got me was that you had to dress for the cold because you walked everywhere, but then when you go into the shops, they're heated to about boiling point. Then step out again into the cold. Maddening. I even heard them talking about how the shops were too hot on the news.

Tried to talk DH into transferring to the UK branch of the company he worked for at the time. He thought about it then decided no. To this day I regret not moving there.

We went all over Scotland, too, in a rental car. Stopped briefly in England at Housestead's Fort since I wanted to see Hadrian's Wall, and the rest of the trip was back through Scotland. It was amazing. Best vacation I've ever had. Ever.

Sorry, I just can't wrap my head around anyone not wanting to go back! But then I didn't freeze!

I Have Been Accused

...of being a vast wasteland of useless knowledge at least once a week.

I get about 5 phone calls in the wee hours each year from drunken friends or family who need to know something RIGHT THAT SECOND.

The last one was a group of female family/friends calling from a bar in Seattle at 2am my time to ask who the first President Bush's running mate was. Someone lost $50 when I knew. Laughing out loud

I really don't know why that kind of stuff sticks in my brain at the expense of useful things, like where my car keys are, or my bank balance. Eye-wink
