Ideas for pretend play vanity toys, anyone?

Santa brought a sweet little girl's vanity table for DD this Christmas and she's asking for the brushes, cosmetics, and other accoutrements that you think of going with a vanity table. I'd like to indulge some of this pretend play, but I can't stand the plastic vanity/cosmetic/beauty sets commercially available. Not only are they mostly cheap plastic that breaks, but they have real makeup which is completely innappropriate for a 5 yr old.

There's one toy, the only one that I can find, that is remotely appropriate, a Wooden Cosmetic Set, that's perfectly adorable, but it's also $60 which shoots it right out of the realm of possibility.

So, my question is, do you have any ideas for creating a little girl's pretend play beauty/cosmetic set with little or no money? I'm in no mood to scrounge around thrift stores--I always end up going to three or four different ones and yet never find what I'm looking for.

I have a dim idea of making a pretend blow dryer out of toilet paper rolls. But I'm blanking on the rest.

Anyone?

old packaging?

If you have any old or empty makeup packaging of your own (old lipsticks that sort of thing) perhaps you could remove the old makeup and make pretend makeup with Fimo or something like that to fit into it? You could paint the cases with acrylic paints to make it all match like in your picture I imagine.

Sorry, best I could think of.

Look in the dollar store

The dollar stores have a lot of cosmetic stuff like blush brushes, little jars, fancy containers. I have even seen play cosmetics for little girls there, its basically baby powder with color and colored lipgloss etc....
Hope this helps!

If You don't want her to

If You don't want her to have make up she can pretend she is putting on blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick using paintbrushes that you may already have around. Kids paint brushes are just the right size to use as makeup brushes.

You can put Qtips and cotton balls in clear jars on the vanity as well

toilet paper rolls can be used for hair curlers if fastened with bobby pins

Any empty makeup of your own can be tossed in too.

Hope she has fun with it!

Maybe ask some girlfriends

Maybe ask some girlfriends of yours if they have any stuff that they don't use... such as a hairdryer. You can cut the cord so it's not able to be plugged in. I have 2 little girls, and they LOVE playing with stuff that is real (but un-usable)like mine. Also, you'd be suprised how much a little one will love just plain 'ol chapstick! (like lipstick, but no color or mess!)
