New Years Day

We spent today puttering. Took down the tree, stored all the ornaments and other holiday gewgaws, got them all put away [1] and the tree wrapped up and stowed away till next year (yes, we have a fake--saves the blood pressure when it comes time to set it up since it's pre-lit). Got rid of several bud-tugly Christmas stockings that somehow ended up in our things. Even got the holiday tableware packed away.

I'm sitting here relaxing for a bit after moving the furniture around. My work table is now in the bay window, and my big reading chair is back in the book case corner facing the door, where it belongs. I have it pulled out from the wall, which will bug John; he likes the furniture all hugging the edges of the room, but he'll get used to it. Yep, he just came in the door and it's the first thing he said! ha.

Next will be the windows. We have given up on the dang honeycombs we got less than five years ago from JCPenney. A good 17 years ago Mom gifted me with Penney's honeycombs in the downstairs rooms and miniblinds in the kitchen. Those are all still working and look practically brand new--certainly not 17 years old. The ones we replaced right after Louisa was born, in the living room and dining room, have completely fallen apart. The strings snapped, the honeycombs came unglued. They're a sight, our windows aren't covered, and I am pissed.

Mom sent a bunch of pretty lace cafe curtains with the Christmas boxes, enough to do all the downstairs public rooms. Tonight John put up a cheap roller blind to see if we could stand them, and we can. So tomorrow I think will be window treatment day. We'll go buy rollers and rods for all five windows and take down those dang things. Wish I could have started the year with them up, but what the heck.
